I’d likely be out a few exits from anywhere near the city, along direction of travel. Park in a lighted area, nothing valuable in the vehicle. With an out of state plate one has to be careful parking at hotels, a little more of a target. A friend told me a story of whoa years ago about a guy with an out of state plate in Texas. Someone stole his truck with a plethora of personal effects inside. They ended up throwing much of the stuff along the highway, later seriously damaged or destroyed the truck. I was out west prairie dogging years ago, stopped at a smaller town hotel. I told my son I wouldn’t be able to sleep unless I brought the guns inside. The one was a very customized 22-250. I often travel with my German Shepherd, but she wouldn’t want to be in the truck all night.
My truck went down halfway to Wyoming due to contaminated fuel. In the back, under a bunch of gear were a couple of prarie dog dispatching sticks. Left them in there and watched the truck leave getting towed to a dealer 10 miles from where I was standing in front of a random hotel that the tow driver dropped me at. Very disconcerting, not much else I could do. All ended well and I was back on the road the next morning. Will never forget that feeling. A day's drive from home, duffle over shoulder watching my own vehicle get taken to a place I didn't know. I was by myself. Nobody to ring up for a hand. Had an email exchange with one of the employees that still works at that dealer who got the garbage out of the fuel system for me a year ago. I had left a *desperate note for them on the driver's seat before the tow driver took it away, explaining my situation. He remembered me and my shiny blue truck (it was a nice looker).
I got off on a tangient.... My advice is to speak with hotel staff and ask if you are ok or not, security wise. Some offer monitoring, some could care less. The old style motels where you could park right in front of your door were always a decent choice.
For sure his pistol and wallet will come inside with him. Problem is he's taking as many hunting mounts as he fit in the back of the cab, it would just take too long to unload and reload every night. And a comfortor to cover them up, but...
I’d stay on either edge (before or after), Topeka isn’t really to bad in the big picture… But I think I saw there might be some decent construction going on in the Topeka I-70 area… I’ll try to see if I can find out more… I seem to recall, bridge?? … there is the 470 bypass also available…

There has to be a way to rig the truck so the passenger is permanently closed. I saw something about a coat hanger but seemed out of context. Maybe jamb something inside the door frame bolt and the hook that comes down on it? LOL, superglue?
Is $60 in $5's and 1's enough for toll booths? I only see them from Nashville to SC but.... He'll have his debit card and bigger denominations for other stuff.
