Well this spring has been a busy one but almost all are. Recently I stopped by a sawmill close to my workplace and they had a massive pile of butt ends of logs piled up. Mostly hardwood but some popular. They told me that they usually chip it all up and sell it to a hybrid power plant. They told they be glad to sell me some so I took my dump trailer. Going to see how much this load will be once spilt to determine if it’s worth. They loaded all the wood up which made it easy here is some pics I figured maybe a cord and half. What do you guys think.
Nice load and potential connection you have. The cut off shorts can be a pain to store and handle, but looks like some decent wood. Bins and totes are the norm here for shorts. Technically poplar is a hardwood even though the wood is softwood. Great SS wood. Dries fast too. Hard to judge volume by a loose log load so I wont venture a guess. Split and stack and let us know.
Can't see them getting much for the hoggings plus they have to grind and haul it. I think the firewood price should be at least half of going market since you are doing them a favor. A stave mill here used to give away butts until their pile would get low then they'd start charging $20/pickup I think? That was *all white oak.
I have been working on getting it split and stacked , they are some shorter chucks from the bucking it up. I plan own constructing some totes from old wooden pallets. They charge forty bucks for a dump trailer load. I’d say 90 % of it is hardwood but some popular. So far I have split a cord and probably got a rick left. Not bad. I have always said no firewood is truly free. It takes time, gas and wear and tear on your equipment. I’m going to try to get three more loads and go from there
About twenty miles from this sawmill is a big hybrid power plant they burn a mixture of coal, wood and some type of quarry Rock. The plan is a fairly new facility. I’ve seen lots of woods chips hauled to the plant.
