Went to a local garage sale yesterday. Very unpleasant man presiding. I was interested in an old hand saw and asked the price from his wife. He immediately jumped in and told me in no uncertain terms that if I wanted that saw I would have to buy a two saw package and no bargaining "My price is firm, I don't believe in wasting my time quibbling!" "My price or the highway." Again, very unpleasant! I picked the two saws pictured and said "OK, how much for these two"? "$5 and don't try to chisel me." Although I briefly considered telling him his price was way light but what else could I do but give him $5 and leave with my tail between my legs! I will do some kind of artwork with these. I am wondering if this is an ice saw? Blade and tooth patterns are so bewildering.
For someone with a fetish of intentionally ripping himself off, that guy sure sounds like a jerk to me! Russ: +1, jerk: 0 Nice score!
Found this 0423-2822P-MTDC: Saws That Sing The pictured saw has a perforated lance tooth pattern for the teeth and is an all around pattern except for frozen or extremely hard wood.
All so found this about ice saws and docking saws https://icetoolcollection.com/13otherrelateditems.htm . Learn a bunch every day! I have at least two saws that are metal handled and may be either ice or docking saws. Interesting that ice saws have extreme set and may be hollow ground while docking saws will have a more moderate crosscut set. Also, many crosscut saws for wood were also put to cutting ice and, presumably, Certain ice saws were occasionally used to cut wood. Anything to get the job done and confuse us newcomers!
Always interesting what you find at tag sales and the folks you deal with. Some people think their stuff is worth a fortune and in this case he didn't know. I would've handed him a ten for both saws just to see his reaction. I imagine those saws are pretty common in your area?
Fairly common but usually priced sky high! Just checked Craig's List and there were 4 or 5 posts involving crosscut or bow saws and all fairly expensive.
See I would have been very tempted to utter 'I'm not taking it for less than $6!' just to watch the process.
Or being a garage sale he was pricing things very cheap and he was tired of people beating him down. We are about to deal with this this weekend State Route 40 garage sale nationwide. Put $5 on a $20 item and people offer $2, there is a point where it is ridiculous. I rarely sell anything anymore, sits on the shelf or goes in the trash.
The last several things that I have bought from FBMP I just paid their asking price, as it was very fair...I often make an offer anyways, but there comes a point where I'd be embarrassed to even try that.
