Any ideas? I'm lucky if I can ID them when alive w/leaves, much less dead and barkless. It was 50' from my driveway on the DNR land. Blow down and they just cut it enough to get it off the trail. I couldn't let it just sit there.
Large growth rings and the way the grain is kind of torn, plus the dead/barkless description says elm to me.
Im thinking along the lines of elm like Eric. Any pics of a barkless round? Elm has distinct borer/worm trails that make ID easy
Barkless elm that has no rot is a prized find among many FHCers. Fresh cut green elm is a nightmare to split for the most part, but the dead barkless splits clean plus it seems to "petrify" becoming harder and denser sounding like bowling pins knocked together. Plus in some cases its ready to burn. You'll be able to burn that in the Fall.
I didn't see any borer trails in his pics? Does elm have those little "thorn" spikes? I've seen them on tulip. I have a lot less experience with elm than you, of course.
I agree, maple. The 3rd picture does it for me. You can see those swirls you see in guitars that are made of maple.
Elm has a strong unique smell to it Dang I guess that was my one interaction quota for the day. See you tomorrow maybe
