Winding this up. I put my turkey blind under my son’s ladder stand. Got those 23 rounds of oak busted and hauled. I wish you guys could smell this. Then I picked up the last jag of oak from my woods. I’d like to think I am done but we will see. Turkey starts Wednesday
My brother in law looked at the broke hick on his walk yesterday. He is a better tree feller than I. He told me to put a big nock in her 90 degrees off the hung up part, then start a small back cut and walk away. “next big west wind she’ll be on the ground”. I’m not so sure about that. I think it’s best I just stay the frick away,,,
So sorry for the loss of your friend. I'm glad no one else was hurt when he wrecked. May JESUS give you and his family peace and comfort in this time of loss. May cooler heads prevail over this situation and you can still have access to the property. That's some nice looking work you have been doing. One way to get that tree down...notch and backcut the small tree holding the broke limb, leave a good hinge, then notch big tree same direction as small tree, backcut...probably bore cut to avoid barberchair, drive wedges on each side, snip holding wood on back and RUN back right side.
My wife went to a garage sale this morning. She bought a Green Bay Packer lawn chair for $5. She was elated. On the way to her car was the “free pile”. She grabbed two items. I was elated. Oil and steel baby! Tried to remove some patina it already had a decent edge. Handle is dry rotted though.
My monster woods pile is done growing for the spring. Last year it measured 20 cords this year it is a tad smaller. I am guessing 15-17 cords of mostly oak. If my wife holds the tape I will measure it. Have a great summer everyone! Safe travels!
Not sure I can save the handle on my wife’s free camp axe. It’s pretty dry rotted in the head but a fresh wedge filled it out a little. Used a knife blade scraped the old varnish off, sanded it, found three cracks in the handle. Rubbed in three coats of linseed oil. Wrapped some Super 33 around some bad spots. Why do I use red tape? Will be easier to find it in the woods!
I was thinking JB Weld cuz I have some. Should I pull the wedge out and try JB or leave the wedge in and JB over the top?
Just spitballin here...take the wedge out, fill, make a "starter slot" in the wet epoxy with a thin oiled (or something that would keep it from sticking) wedge Then set the permanent wedge when dry. Any better ideas walt?
That would be worth a try , or buy or make a new handle and rehang it. Stop on over and we will fix it
Long trip from Wisconsin, just for an axe handle. Might be worth it to hang in your cabin for a couple days though!! LOL
There is a product called Git Rot by Boat life that is a penetrating epoxy used for rot in boats. Penetrates rotted spongy material and the hardens and restores structural integrity. A small kit can be had for around $20 that will do several small jobs. I have used it on several occasions for just this kind of job. Works great!
