Made a trip today to drop off some brush. I did a little exploring on the backside of the pile and found some rounds…BIG rounds. I walked over the trailer office and asked the guy if I could take some. He gave me the green light and said they don’t want people getting hurt taking stuff. So note to self…ask. So here’s what I rolled up to. Yeah, I wasn’t going to be able to heave most of that into the truck. But! There were a few I could get. If you look to the left, you can see the backend of my Ridgeline for scale. Here’s what I ended up with: My best guesses: Oak, two cedar rounds (must have been a big Cedar!) Maple, cherry and no idea on the boneless/skinless ones. They had some heft, so some denseish hardwood. Oak logs (stuff below it is what I already had:
Lucky you. When I was there back in the Fall, they said no scrounging. Looks like oak and maple on the BS logs. Nice grab! I always cringe when I see big cedar cut up. Once you've seen it milled you'll see what I mean.
Seriously…that would have made some nice boards. I’ll probably run it through the splitter and make some kindling out of it. The batch you gave me awhile back was fantastic for getting the stove going; especially when stone cold.
Thanks! That big Oak round was brutal! I barely got it up on to the tailgate…head to take a breather and then get it up into the bed.
Happened again! Left with brush, came home with rounds. I really didn’t think I’d get anything as it was a Saturday and usually pretty busy. After dropping the brush, I asked the guy and he said no problem. I guess he was subbing for someone else. Anyways, got some nice oak rounds! There was another crew there dumping more rounds, but they were covered in vines and I did not want to roll the dice on poison ivy or poison whatever.
Thinking those are Norway maple. Nice grab though. I miss going to Wallingford. Much better selection than North Haven. Always fun to see what's there for the taking. Maybe they've laxed the rules since I last went there. Guy was rather firm about no scrounging.
Recycling run yesterday. Checked out the brush pile. Some junky pine and limb wood. Nothing worth the effort.
Ever think of bundling confers specifically for campfires? Pine meets your quick seasoning times, eh?
No, Ive tried retailing bundles with little success. I have a bit of white cedar slab wood from the mill across the street I CSS. I'll try and sell it mixed in with subpar hardwood (past its prime, bit buggy, cottonwood mix) in quarter cord lots.
Had to be at the other compost center to PU a load of mulch. Checked the brush pile first. Couple birch rounds and a hickory chunk. Might've been more but buried, but a quick scan and I didnt see any. I had to beat Skier76 to it! Kinda miss going to this one. Better pickins' there. Went back for a second load and spotted this pile of nuggets. Not for me.
Nice one Brad! I pulled out a landscaping bush that the Mrs asked me to remove. I almost headed over again! So good job on grabbing those!
There was a pile of weathered bucked firewood on the back side. He said I could come back for it. Had a couple yards of mulch on the PU so no room either trip. Kinda wish I took the nuggets though. I need some dry/semi-seasoned to top off a half cord bin.
