As we are working through my dad's estate, he was a farmer at heart, he collected a few old JDs. One of them is a diesel that was running when he parked it. He had pulled all the tin off and primed it but did not get a chance to paint before his health went south. I am told that the brakes are locked up and that it may not be all that hard to get them broke free. Seeing if anyone has knowledge they would like to pass along for a novice like me to try before we find a new home for it. Don't have pictures at the moment but can get some in a few weeks. Locked as in shoes rusted to the drums ? Or does that one have the short shaft/ pinion gear assembly? If the latter the shafts can rust into the housing.
Next time I get up there I will take a look and take some pictures. Unfortunately, I don't really know much about it other than it must be in pretty good shape for him to pull the tin for painting. That is all stored inside. I have heard the shoes can rust to the drums and watched on video several months ago about it. Thank you for the replies as it is on our short to-do list to get it moved out to our "Ranch" that is a few miles away. The property it is sitting on was sold last year and I know he would like to out of there but not bugging us yet.
I’ve rebuilt the brakes and other stuff on my JD 630. Not really difficult and I would be surprised if after you get them freed up they are just fine. Could be the brake cylinder and I might suggest a search on the forum “Yesterday’s Tractor”. Will likely find helpful information there! Good luck and let us know how you do! Edit: Make sure the parking brake pawls are released. Little lever down by the brake pedals
If it’s a diesel, it’s a 70, or should I say, not a 60. Either will have mechanical brakes and I’d be a little shocked if they would both lock simultaneously. I would see if it can me moved in neutral either by rocking or towing. Generally speaking, a 70 diesel will have a cranking engine (pony start) so just a bit more complicated to fire up and try to move around. Was the tractor under roof?
I'm sure it's diesel with the pony motor (always loved them growing up). It is stored outside for now, but motor was not locked up last year. Would love to just find someone to buy it as we don't have that much time to deal with it and dad was the tractor genius. Most likely sometime this summer we will get to it and if it moves, tow it out to mom's pole building a few miles away. Thanks everyone and I will try to remember pictures next time I'm up there.
