Hey all, its been too long since i hung out here but im running into something new to me. I have always processed my own wood, we are on a 3 year plan.... This year and 2 years ago i didnt have time and had no logs so i purchased firewood. I thought when i bought firewood it would be MOSTLY stackable cordwood. Both times i got ALOT of the kind of stuulff like in these pictures. Out of 4 cords i received about ⅓ to ½ cord of this. Is this normal or am i just spoiled on my own supply.
IME this is normal; they split to conveyor to dump body. Splitter trash included, as probably used solid bottom conveyor. Pick it up put in a trash can and call it kindling
I feel like i paid for a cord of wood, not splitter trash. I never keep it when i process for myself....
It's just splitter trash. It happens. Does their process remove it from the product? Apparently not. The more mechanized the processing the more splitter trash is produced and can be included but you'll always get some. I bet if your source was some kid hand splitting and hand loading a pickup that your splitter trash would be much less but there would still be some crumbles from movement. Firewood isn't clean. I burn it. If it's dry the stuff burns really well.
I have bought some wood from a dedicated seller (got splitter trash) and coworkers (no splitter trash), but to some extent, I do agree it’s normal… after all, just shy of gluing the thin shards of wood back onto splits, it is derived from the “cordage” you’re buying. Its all the splitter trash as its going through a processor, onto conveyor and into dump truck. No screen at the end to filter it out. Guy I cut for PT is very adamant about sweeping the table of splitter crumbs while your splitting. The splits go up the conveyor onto a mound. He has had complaints and drying issues because of this. One of my customers bought a cord from another wood seller and it was a lot worse than yours.
Ok, i get that its inevitable to get it, should it count towards stackable wood though. Alot of it is shredded punky frass. I think his logs are stored on the ground. We all.know it doesnt take long for pubk to happen.
Yep, someone who doesn’t claim a good, clean product isn’t going to show social media pics of all that included in a delivery. Of course, some who deliver nice clean splits may end up charging more, too. I guess it’s a true case of “buyer beware.”
As others have stated, it's just splitter trash as the wood is split, goes up the conveyor into the truck. My process is more labor intensive as I split, pile the splits and let them season and then hand load everything. If there are mini splits - firewood length but thin like a pencil, they make it in the load as they build up if they don't. They would total about half a wheelbarrow at best. I do have some ask for more though because they use it as kindling.
That splitter litter is great for cold starts of the stove. Myself, I'll sort through it and keep the larger pieces for starting fires throughout the winter months. The scrappy leftovers go straight into the fire pit.
Yes, I still do. Lots of the time, 99 will run the controls on the splitter which is a huge help! But even with the "handmade" firewood, I'll end up with splitter litter! I own enough land that I can dump the sawdust and spread it out and we'll never see it again.
