Good score worthy of its own thread separate from my hoarding fever thread.

Working at the woodyard yesterday and my ears perked up when I heard a chainsaw running close by. Cutting on and off several times then I thought I heard a tree fall over. Took a quick ride to investigate. Found the house and walked into the yard. Tree almost over and two guys struggling pulling a rope and down it came while they yelled to each other in Spanish. I asked for the boss as the feller came over. I asked for the wood and to buck myself. He initially was reluctant, but I was persistent. "we cut to 16" he said several times in very broken English.

Arrived this morning to this. All down, limbed and waiting for me. Perfect.
Why I dont like tree service cuts! The few others they cut were 18-20" Bucked all the red oak first. Notice his stump? Me and his two guys loaded it. They would've had to carry it to the chip truck anyhow as a gated fence blocked access for machinery.
red oak unloaded. Second load was dead barkless maple and silver maple (rare for me to score a wild grown one in my area) Several rounds behind the pile. Last load was more silver maple and a long dead barkless cherry that I'll process off the truck tomorrow. Step grand daughters Lucy (right) and Flora ("baby bird" to those familiar with the thread) approve!
Got they guys card and number so I have another connection for wood.

LOL! They had bucked a few pieces prior to my arrival that I corrected, much to my frustration. A few still in the mix like that.

Do you mark logs or just eyeball it?

LOL!!! They just wanna get it cleaned up ASAP. I let his two guys used my machete and "cleaver" to carry the rounds. They liked it after a while vs. on the shoulder. One guy halved a few rounds after seeing me do the oak that way with the Isocore.
Boss watched me mark the logs and cut. I ran out of mix late and he finished my cuts.

Around lunch time the boss called me up to their truck. Turns out homeowner bought lunch. Just by coincidence it was a guy I've known for many years' daughters house. He is retired. Had a good chat with him while having some pizza. All in all a very interesting day at the cut for this hoarder.

 

Processed the load off the truck this afternoon. Dead cherry, general cordage, and nuggets.

Silver maple bundle splits. Gonna get a great yield of bundle wood from this score. Ill split more next week.

Yeah for sure. When the guy called me over I'm kinda thinking there's an issue that the homeowner didn't want me cutting or on their property. Imagine my surprise when there was pizza and grinders.

Honestly I could've eaten more pizza, but I don't eat a heavy lunch and usually brown bag a small lunch.

It mostly is no bueno, but it was in the way of the other and Goldilocks sized (still heavy sum beech).

The heartwood goes to smoker inventory and I have a friend who gets a half+ cord of barkless each Winter. I've tried to use it in bundles but even under cover in the shed the borers made a mess of the bark on. Another cordage customer likes oak so I try to give him a cord of it every year so I will take some now and then.

Ill let it go at least 18 months and/or two Summers. I have a cord ready for 26-27 that's a couple years stacked. Another 3/4 cord of barkless thats nearly ready for use. Another 3/4 cord from December that this will top off. The barkless will get moved to the bundle shed some where and used when ready. Im still surprised oak is as popular as a smoking wood. Out of the eight flavors I sell its in the top four with cherry, hickory and apple.

 

Oak is a good cooking wood.
