Well now that I got your attention……..I did not burn the entire tree. Our county conservation district has a record of biggest trees by species in the county. The biggest Hackberry happens to be a street tree in the small town right in front of the auto parts store where my partner works. A huge dead limb fell off and landed in the parking lot. Knowing I’m a scrounger, she brought it home for the insert. First Hackberry I ever burnt and I have no complaints. Measurement for the tree taken 20 years ago are 145” circumference, 80’ tall and 73.5’ crown width. Picture attached.
Nice looking tree. From this vantage point I'd have sworn that was an elm based on the shape. I've heard that they made decent middle of the road firewood. Around here I've only found a few, all too small to be firewood worthy.
There’s some good sized hackberry trees around here. I won’t pass it up if’n it’s not too difficult to access. Not great shelf life in logs or rounds though. Get it split and stacked out of the weather and she’ll keep just fine
Neat story! Hackberry is kinda rare around here. Never have scored any. Bucket list/novelty score for me. Like Eric I would've guessed elm from a distance. One of the cooler barks in the tree world.
