Id like to have some of the heartwood for its rot resistant. I've been thinking of making a set of Adirondack chairs from all the rot resistant woods. Doesn't mean it'll ever happen!
Cherry Honey Locust Black Locust* White oak Mulberry* Sassafras* Black walnut Eastern red cedar* are the eight that are very rot resistant. Oh and that katsura log you told me was rot resistant. Hopefully still in buzz-saw's pile. Heartwood on the ones that have sapwood. *=I have milled one by stock on hand. Be a very interesting conversation piece to have one of each chair around a fire pit.
Split the load off the truck and sorted as I went. No twist and the yield of primo splits was enough to make even T.Jeff Veal proud! Good amount of bundle wood was stacked temporarily until ready to be moved next door. 5x6' stack will get good sun. Several bundles worth of heartwood splits for smoke inventory. (stacked behind the wheelbarrow) Plus three wheelbarrows worth on nuggets went into the bin I'm filling. The rest general cordage. Splitter ran out of gas with a few rounds left. Need to fill gas can tomorrow. Id say a half cords yield for the score. Would love a few more scores like this of any wood.
That would be pretty, cherry, white oak, sassafrass, black locust, hedge... It would be colorful. Edit...I did a BuZZsaw Brad thang... posted before finishing reading the thread...... At least he thought of more varieties than I did
Guilty more than once myself but Jeff you could also say Brad posted it and went back and edited to add to original post That would make it buZZsaw BRAD fault
I did that really fast and it bugs me its less than perfect. Normally I use a feeler gauge when I stack! Isnt that the way you do it?
Ive been known to do that! Well go back and find typos, errors, mind fart statements etc and edit that is.
Moved the dead maple and elm next door and tossed into the shed. Not sure where they will fit in the drying sequence of stacking. Filling from right to left in the pic. Wood on left is tulip poplar which is temporary. Have more ash heartwood from that cut to go in first. Temporary stack of cherry heartwood for smoker bundles. Met the guy from the apple score at his yard. Big mess with random logs, brush, stumps piled everywhere. He was shut down with the snow and his big grinder was down for repairs. Spied a pile of recent sugar maple dropped off and he will move it for me next week to take. Stay tuned for pics next week.
Load of cottonwood cut today from my "unlimited supply" source. Split entire load. More there to cut.
Awesome progress Brad. Just getting caught up on your thread. Beautiful cherry, terrible seeing multiple metal strikes. Especially barbed wire. That chit kills chain.
So how was splitting that cottonwood? I’ve never had any, scuttlebutt says it’s hard to split but those splits don’t look like they put up much resistance.
It splits rather easily, but like the TP the exit wound can be gnarly at times. I learned to go parallel to the bark results with very clean and even smooth splitting.. At first its like hitting a saturated sponge as water will ooze out and it will pop apart with no sound or fanfare like the harder woods. Hand splitting its like hitting a block of clay. Not sure how it would do with your box wedge.
Finished splitting all the cottonwood from my "unlimited" source. Moved some next door. Stacked a half cords worth temporarily to get it out of the way. Still more to be stacked. Yesterdays load pile ill stack today. More may get moved next door as well. Probably hitting the dead ash cut again tomorrow.
I need to me me an "unlimited" source, lol...............Am gonna pull ad on CL Thought I had an in with a tree guy but he ghosted me. Shame too because I have at least 6 big oaks, maybe more that need coming down I am targeting next spring.
Still reeling from that missed hickory score before the holidays last year huh Chuck? Years back I had placed an ad on CL looking for free wood. The few that answered had stacks of rotting wood that made better compost than firewood. Good luck if you place the ad. Do you check FBM for free wood?
