Shagbark?

    Not to mention shagbark hickory doesn't grow this far north! I know bark on old silver maples can also have that shagbark look. These two trees are the only red maples I remember seeing that look like shagbark, however that just may be because they are in my woods and I see them pretty much every day (and just haven't paid that much attention when out in the national forest as I'm looking more at downed trees for potential firewood than standing ones or looking for bear/deer for the freezer).

    Never had any shagbark hickory. :(.
    The day I come across some, Im taking every slither I can get.

    It’s good stuff for sure. Does attract borers quickly and it’s the reasons they developed full face shields :)

    We have maybe about a dozen mature Shagbarks on our 1 acre lot. I pretty much leave them alone, but cut the smaller ones that pop up.

    I love shag but I have to get it split immediately. Or I get dust piles from da bugs.

    Hit or miss with borers on my hickory either shagbark or pignut. Same with other borer loving species.

    Sold a half cord of honey locust in January that was stacked for 3.5+ years and top covered. Very little borer evidence.
