Things thawing and now getting saturated, we had a tree leaning bad at our gun club. This morning we had this gum tree leaning about 45º+ and moving slowly to the ground. It was gonna block a road. I dropped it and came home with a small load of fresh stuff. Only had the camera here. Sad, it was a nice little tree... The tree guys around here will be going strong till June.
Yep, that's what I thought when I first saw it too, especially if it has that sassafrass-typical spicy smell.
My mother’s only two complaints about firewood. 1 I need more than I have. 2 why isn’t there more Sassafras in the mix?
Dave, I thought you had snow there!!! I love to cut sassafras just to enjoy the smell of it. Enjoy it Dave.
Thanks for the schooool'n. Then the tree right next to it must be gum because there were those "pricky/monkey balls" all around the ground where this was, so I naturally assumed it was a gum tree. If that's the case.... There must be a thousand lining our roads in the gun club. There is lots of gum also, we are inundated with gum trees. There are millions and millions of these seed pods on our road. Very cool, this is another tree I don't think I've had, how's the BTU's?
Dennis, this is typical of around here this time of year. Now back in January it stayed around 3 weeks+ This time of year, we'll get snow and generally the next day it's 50º so we get a quick melt. This year will be a tree workers heaven. Trees are coming down and were blown down because of our Nor'Easter all over the town. Sandy soils and wet ground is the issue. The Ice/snow blowing this last time around put a "hurt'n" on many yound trees. Even some of the big Maples went down.
More Today! I got another load of Sassafras and Holly. Much more to come. I was at my gun club since 7am this morning. We have about 12 trees that are ready for removal, It's a shame. Ground is so soft here now many trees are not gonna stay put in the soft soil. Our club is in between swampy/wet lands areas. I'm sharing with a few fellas who are helping clean up and Mother Nature is providing all of us. I have a Maple tree to get next, and a good size one...
Sass is somewhat rot resistant. Not the best but not terrible. Call it a poor man’s fence post If the gun club has any use for such things that don’t need to last forever,,,,,,like something that may get shot up anyway, you’re looking at it
Nice load and even better looking tailgate. Sass good SS wood and smells great. Id be sniffing every split.
OH. I have harvested plenty of sweet gum. I FULLY understand what your saying my friend. I don't mind burning it though, and I already have some in the wood racks. For me, I gotta take what I can get, I can't be real picky because of where we live.
Completely understand! We have sweet gum on our acreage and have used it too, but I now avoid it as we have other species that are available.
And, usually, I will too if I can. I have a tree guy who gives me things he takes down. It saves him on tipping/dump fees so I can't really be choosey. It burns fine! but what a REAL B!TC# to split...
