My annual winter camping trip to the White Mtns in NH. We got 6in of snow the 2nd night, needing the Forestry Service to plow us out. Our trip was cut short due to the blizzard. Good cure for insomnia - Winter-2026
I really like the little stove with the propane bottle you had outside. Quite a few ways of cooking food. what was happening with the bucket outside?
New stove. It's OK, but not installed to our liking. Previous stove was not pushed as deep into the opening like this one. So, no stovetop cooking. Plus, there had been a 3ft horizontal stove pipe that radiated alot of heat. It warmed up to low 60's. Cool goe some. Just fine for others.
Previous tenants put hot coals in it. It was frozen in place. That bottle of bourbon was not up to the drinker's standard. So, an attempt was made to circle the bucket with alcohol and light on fire. It wouldn't even light. So, we scraped out what we could, added new hot coals, and it was free in minutes. That's my brother's oven/stove. Works well. We've cooked cookies in it previously.
Bummer about the new stove and doing away with the cook top. Didn't you mention last year that the old stove was cracked?
The sheet metal on it was loose, but still viable. Was a Jotul stove. Rangers said someone had "cracked" it sometime since November when we were there, requiring replacement. We're guessing someone spilled liquid on the hot stove. Having it pushed as far in as it is, lessens the chance of cracking this one.
Looks like a great trip! Nice cabin in the WMNF. That's beautiful country. I've never been up there in February. Good time had by all!
Rustic cabin. No cell signal. No power. No water. The outhouse is out back. They provide all the wood to keep the place warm. The mountains with snow are impressive looking.
It's a great place to camp and I am lucky enough to live here enjoy it year round. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons cause I like to burn the crop I harvested 2 or 3 years ago. Great pics, you could make a tourist brochure with those pics. Thanks!!!
About 2.5 miles from there are the Wilderness Cabins, a log home for the owner with multiple cabins for rent and the same thing with no power, cell, etc. It was for sale around 22 years ago and I considered looking into purchasing it as my retirement gig from the Corps. Ended up not retiring at the time and obviously not purchasing the cabins. While I'm glad I stayed in the military for that last tour, I somewhat always regretted not trying to buy the cabins. Would have been a neat retirement gig.
Late to the party here. Looks like a fun time. Hopefully the outhouse seat was insulated? The snow made it even funner IMO. I would've stayed for the blizzard but understand why you didn't. Was the firewood up to FHC standards?
The firewood burned. Some with a bit of liquid out the ends. Another year for FHC members. There are some if us that use a closed-cell foam "gasket" when on the toilet. It's cut to the shape of a toilet seat and is cleaned with a few wipes.
