Been on ebay since April ‘99. Bought and sold tons of stuff over the years. Recently listed and sold an oem pair of headlights for work boss. Then I get several emails as such:

    upload_2026-2-13_17-4-39.png

Can’t recall the previous time I sold on there but I never encountered this. I’m seriously out if this is it.
    :headbang:

I called and messaged seller telling him I’ll gladly sell them if he pays via pp g&s but if eBay won’t pay me, I’m not shipping them.

Is this SOP now and since when?

I had heard that the IRS is going to begin stricter monitoring of "side income".

Strange. I sold something on eBay last month and didn't get hassled with IRS B.S. Then again, it was only a $30 sale and I typically don't sell more than a few hundred dollars worth of items on there within any given year, below the threshold of being obligated to claim it anyway.

I know if you receive $600 or more from pay services for anything other than friends and family, you have to claim it. Anything goods and services you are being paid for counts.

I haven't sold anything on eBay in a few years but don't recall ever seeing that. I know they lowered the amount to $600 IINM. It used to be 20K when I sold a few years back. Friends and family is exempt the last I knew.

    Cant blame you for cancelling.

Interesting. Not sure I wanna gamble it after these emails.
I did click on the email sender and my internet provider marked the sender as who they say they are and “secure” so to speak.

Your TIN is your social security number unless you don't have a social security number. Some individuals and of course, businesses, don't have SSN. Because the IRS is cracking down on income sources every entity 'making money' has to be tracked and they do this with taxpayer identity numbers rather than names .
It is generally safe to put your SSN in an email because the email is encrypted, at least until it reaches its destination. It, unfortunately, remains unencrypted on most servers and is where too many thefts of info occur.
You don't have much choice though as your SSN or xTIN is your down and dirty identification of you who or what are.

Your bank and CC needs your SSN for the same reason (s). Ebay and Paypal may not be banks per se, but they are money handlers and they are now required to keep track of yearly totals of every entity they handle money for. I thought this started two or three years ago but I guess if your account has been quiet it has caught up with you..Or maybe Ebay and Paypal, etc. have gotten a pass until now.

Yup, I'm pretty sure that's legit...they started that about the same eBay started charging sales tax.
Heck even marketplace asks questions when you takes down a for sale ad...I decline to answer, but I bet someday that doesn't work... that's why uncle dam wants rid of cash...can't steal his piece of the pie!
As far as I'm concerned, I sell my used widget on FB MP for $20, I paid $40 for it new, so I lost $20, not made $20!! They don't get a piece of the pie every time it's reheated!!!!!

What's next? They gonna have IRS agents stopping at every garage/yard sale?

Just more government overreach at it's finest. I swear there was once a war started because of taxes. :sherlock:

    Yes!
Why do you think they wanted 80k new agents!
There is a tax war coming soon here in Ohio...our property taxes have went completely berserk that last few years...there is a movement to abolish property taxes here in Ohio...the governor says we'll just have 20% sales tax then...I understand they need money to work with, but don't come crying "broke" to me when y'all have been sooooo wasteful and corrupt with OUR money, ya buncha jackholes!!
Same thing with our township too...but I can't even get into that one...it'll really get me steamed!!
Ah geez...went n got my BP all ramped up now...

Just a little warning here folks. More talk of government make the thread lock. Remember the rules.
