4 way slip on wedge for my 35 ton Huskee

    Technically it’s only backwards if you don’t follow the rest of the rules,,,,,,,and they didn’t. I’m of the opinion they copied the design from a push thru splitter of a different design. Like the ones that have no metal under the wedge and are not floating. Or as Isaac pointed out top cutters set further back. It allows the splits to drop down. My splitter doesn’t have that. It jammed the wood between the bottom cutters and the beam. Usually that lifts the wedge about an inch. Quite often the pieces are wedged in there very tight.
    So on a push thru you expect the next round/splits to clear it. But now the wedge has raised an inch and remains there. The next round raises it another inch. Do that again and you’re raised three inches, you hear a grenade go off and the wedge is flying into the air ten feet :) So you end up pulling all those splits out by hand. Half the time you had to pull up the wedge with one hand and a hip to get one out. No fun at all.

    If they had simply gone at a 90 degree horizontal with the bottom wings it probably would have worked. Setting back the top cutters always helps. It at least lessens the load at one single point for the splitter.
    Reversing the bottom bevels is also possible but certainly requires the setback of the top.

    FWIW I spoke to the manufacturer about it. Didn’t want my money back but I thought they should know this new product in their line wasn’t tested well,,,if at all. They didn’t seem very interested in my opinion :) They also dull the blades so people aren’t cutting themselves to shreds pulling that thing on and off. Might not look like much but that wedge must have weighed around 60lbs and the only place to grab is those blades. Bare hands it hurt even dulled up. Think I put 6 hours on it. 5 more than it deserved LOL

    Yes the is a "V". It slides over it like sleeve. It mimics the factory wedge just a little larger. May be I didn't get the exact picture you wanted but I hope these should give you the right idea.

    Perfect. I hope you don’t have it patented, cause I’d hate to go to prison over a splitting wedge.

    So you fabricated this one, correct? It looks to have all of the correct geometry so you did a good job of reengineering what the factory folks got wrong :thumbs:

    Yup! Lots of cutting and fitting then clamped all to the factory wedge with a little clearance then tacked it all together. Removed to bench then finish the welding.You need a little more tolerance than you would expect for it to slip on and off easily. The only place that has tight tolerances is where the factory blade edge fits tightly against the inside of the slip over wedge. I will probably eventually cut off the 1/2" wing wedges on this set up and replace with purchased 3/4" alloy wings.....some day.

    I used paper shims when I built my slip on 4way. Did some very light grinding to smooth it out and it has gotten just a little bit looser over the years. Still a snug fit though.
