4/72 white oak and black locust hopefully this burns. I also forgot how bad the smoke from BL stinks reminds me of old cigarette smoke and urine. Reminds me of the bathroom at the race track when Id go with my dad.
3 here. Dropped into negatives last night. Supposed to be mid 20's today. Pine burning up the coals and oak at the ready. 6 inside. Have a blessed day!
12º this morning, another cold one! Clear and sunny but high is only to hit about 23º. More Oak splits in this morning. I do an ash removal later today, 5 day's of a coal bed getting thick.
Woke up at 2 am to reload with BL. No water! Checked to make sure nothing tripped. That was all good. Got the pump to cycle and had water. Seemed ok. Son got up for work 3:30. No water Realized pressure gauge/valve on tank was froze up. Took a hair dryer to it. Seems to be ok now. Set up a heat lamp I use for peeps over it. Guess I'll have to run the furnace here and there to warm the basement up. The basement is old stone farmhouse basement. Access is only from outside. I'll be honest with you fellow hoarders, Im over this frigid cold!
Checking in post-storm here in Nashville. I gotta say, I've never seen anything like this in person. I don't remember 1994, but that's what everyone is comparing this to. We never lost power, but multiple friends are STILL without power almost a week later. Trees down everywhere (getting tons of firewood, silver lining). Schools out all week, they're using them as warming shelters for people without power so that may even extend into early next week. Certain subdivisions were told it would be 1-2 more weeks without power. Ice is still on trees and surfaces, we may get a few hours above freezing today. We are lucky to have buried power lines here, that saved us in our subdivision. If you ever needed an advertisement for wood heat, this is it.
8 out Shagbark. Going to do an elm black locust combo in a bit. I'm not ready for Spring. Too many things I don't want to do yet. I would like some reasonable Winter temps now and then.
Another cold one. Only 9 degrees but the sun is shining. A couple more nights of negatives left to go. The boiler has a monster coal bed so I'm going to let that burn down today. The shop heater is on so that should pull some extra wood up the chimney.
My pressure tank is in a basement side room where Bilco door/steps come in. It gets pretty cold in there so I have a trouble light with 60w bulb laying under gage/valves to keep from possible freeze up. It happened once before I did this.
Yep, that's why when I hear the furnace run a little during these cold days, it's actually reassuring to know the pipes will be fine.
