-1/70 with a little help from the ng boiler. Stove full of ash now.

 

-8/69 here now. Finishing off a load of Osage Orange, oak and beech before another reload.

 

7 feels like -6. Just a little bit of coals this morning at 7:30. I didnt get up to reload and I slept in a little. Thermostat says 60*. Which I thought it would be colder downstairs TBH. Regardless BL to the rescue.

 

1 degree above zero. Tulip poplar and beech chunks to get things going. Plenty of black locust staged up to keep beating back the cold.

 

-34 now.

That’s exactly where we live, in a river bottom. Always 10-15° colder here…and hotter in the summer because it’s gravel.

The new neighbors (shared driveway) are learning what cold is and how snow drifts. I told em how to plow the driveway to prevent it from drifting in, but did they listen? Nope. Plowed the snow right up against the windward fence line. I told em it all had to get pushed away from the fence or it would drift shut at least as deep as the pile they made. Sure enough it happened, and I’m not gonna fix it. I have nowhere to be, so they can deal with it. Some lessons need to be learned the hard way. I’m not going out in a bobcat to spend half a day fixing their screwup.

 

-40/74 coldest I’ve seen in a few years! The Fireview is getting it done during the day with small hot loads but when it’s this cold in the evenings I burn some propane so I’m not feeding all night.

 

10/67. Just put 3 splits of oak in the firebox and giving them full throttle to warm things back up a bit. Probably should have used some blocust last night.

 

-22/66 by thermostat 70 in Living Room which has the insert. Burning Maple and Box Elder. Drinking coffee and enjoying my Saturday morning. Wife is still sound asleep.

 

-14° out. 69° inside. It's supposed to get above zero today.

I just rechooched with all box elder splits on top of a bed of coals from last night. Last night I put in 2 big elm pieces and threw in whatever small stuff that I could fit in the stove after those did pieces of elm. The furnace kicks in from time to time, but not much. I'm fine with that.

 

My furnace usually comes on at 66. I have it set for 69 for the cold snap. It comes on now and then and moves heat around the house. It also prevents the stove filling with coals trying to recover.

 

One degree out, NG, runs about $50 a month.

 

Stay safe Hoarders, keep an extra eye on the elders and neighbors. Time to break out the good stash.

I would be hesitant to try removing any snow that was plowed up against a fence....way too easy for unintentional damage to occur. (If it's that kind of fence)

 

I know this isn’t a usual post but I wanted to prove I wasn’t a liar.
Got up at 5 this morning and got the stove going. 65 when I came down and probably close to 68 when I left, not sure what it got up to but it was 67 when I got back from my hike.
I have evidence.

 

But.... I don't want to know what winter is like. I want you to keep that crap up north where it belongs. Stay safe

It’s not a high value fence or even that important.
I already tried getting close once and discovered a 12” drop right next to it. The bobcat dropped right in and I was unable to turn because I was against a post and both wheels on one side were down. I drove ahead about 8 feet and turned downhill and drove right through the fence. I moved some snow out of the way and then shoved myself back up onto the driveway with the bucket. That part will get fixed in the spring with a bit of wire and some gravel so it doesn’t happen again.

 

20 with sleet, so they got the starting out as snow part wrong. Going to fill the stove with oak.

 

-5/75 hard Maple, Shagbark, and Ironwood going in shortly for the overnight.
