What is your prefered piston stop when doing chainsaw repairs? I read of tieing three knots to the end of starter rope and inserting it in the cylinder. I tried it today while changing a sprocket and it worked well. I think it will be my go to method going forward.
A piece of nylon rope down the spark plug hole. Just gotta make sure it bunches up on top of the piston instead of going out one of the ports. Putting the piston in the correct spot before rope insertion alleviates this problem. Edit: Starter hole? What the ..... Fixed to spark plug. Lol
I use a piece of paracord because I've got a bunch of it on hand. As mentioned previously, watch where the piston is in the stroke before inserting it into the spark plug hole. You don't want the rope to find its way into the intake or exhaust port or else you'll have even bigger problems.
I have an old long bootlace that does the job well. Just make sure any rope you use doesn’t go into one of the ports.
Rope like stated above. I only use a hard piston stop for zeroing the timing wheel if I'm going to port the saw.
I’ve used the cord a lot in the past. If you’re going to work on lots of saws, having a nylon/plastic stop is the way to go. HL supply has them. It’s like a little white L. I guess 3/8th diameter and 2x1 on the L. I’ve used the skinnier black one, supposedly eom Husqvarna tool, and snapped that on third use. It’s for the smaller diameter holes like on the 550xp.
The saw comes with a built in rope. A couple of times in the field I pulled the starter rope out and used a slip knot to keep it out, folded it over and pushed it in.
It's especially dangerous for your piston if an ugga dugga is involved to remove a flywheel nut or clutch. Just asking for damage.
