All rolled up. Have a helper coming to get a load in a couple of weeks, but reckon that pile will last 2027 and 2028 winters
Gosh, that is a lot of wood! You're an animal! How much wood do you burn a year? Thinking of how much energy that is that is required to heat your house by just looking at the firewood!
From Oct 15 to April 15, 16-17 cords lean to holds 17 cords and I reckon there is more than 35 in that pile, as the far back is stacked 8 and one long row in the side that might be 1.5
But that’s minimum of 8 cord; I was trying for years to get 30 cord stacked to be on 3 year plan but life got in way
Greg do you burn wood only in a boiler or is there something else, too? Where do you get your wood? Just curious, have never seen a boiler being from the south. Your setup requires work, does it dollar up great compared to, say, electricity? Or do you just like running a chainsaw, lol.
5000 sf and domestic hot water. One level of the house is partially below grade. So bottom and middle floor with radiant floor heat, top floor has coil in air handler. And I burn what I get for free, which mean everything from maple and tree of heaven to oak and locust. But that’s what I burn in 6 months.
I have a fireplace inside for just fun, and a little outside thing on the deck also for fun I love running a chainsaw, or me or anyone else wouldn’t have an OWB. But I reckon I save 3-4k per year bottom line if I were to account for my gear and gas and chains etc… I have 21 acre with the normal amount of trees falling down, a neighbor with 30 who doesn’t heat with wood, but an arborist friend of mine calls me when he has a hardwood tree that the customer doesn’t want. I have a 16x8x2.5 dump trailer that I drop at job sites and come back and get it when full, or wait if the timing is right while they fill. Couldn’t do what I’d without that friend.
Wrong pic, but same point. That was a neighborhood tree that fell down and I cleaned up in exchange for wood
My biggest problem on windy cold days I think is the wall of the great room. I love that wall and wouldn’t change it, but that room takes a lot of heat because of it
But I’m curious, my best rough estimate is to save 3000-4000 a year takes me about 300 hours of time working with the wood, the furnace, or the gear. So that time is paying me $10-12 an hour! But it’s my favorite 300 hours of the year, so here we are. what do you guys reckon your bottom line savings per year are? Or how much is your wood time paying you for an hour? This should be a fun thread.
Love the wall, I pay extra for that… Talking about the numbers is something I don’t like to do.. I also have 21 acres neighbors got lots more. So I need a tractor to maintain property but use for firewood .. same with Chainsaw, trucks, trailers, lean to Lets not put them in the cost.. SO burning apparatus; stove need’s chimney, boiler needs insulated under ground pipe … big $$$ collection of and prepping fuel, the cheapest part of this is ibuprofen Increase in insurance and maintenance (not just saws and splitters) trucks, tires, trailers directly used in firewood. If I break even over fuel oil I am happy Wait We aren’t counting time on FHC EDITED to add : when I lost power for 24 days; all of which were below freezing my house did not freeze or get frozen pipe damage. When natural disasters happened be it electricity, fire, flood disease etc My family / neighbors knew they could come to our home. Get warm, be fed, and shelter in safety… THATS worth more than $
Great points. I’d have my tractor and truck and a few saws regardless. Would probably not have the mini skid steer and trailer like that. Plan has always been to do this as long as I can, and I’m 60 this year.
