I thought the same. It's been snowy/could for a week or two now. Admittedly I gave it a snack.

    Two different dog experiences today.

On their morning walk Garcia and Gibby met Garcia’s nephew, Jethro. Jethro is a guide dog puppy. He is at a puppy sitter's who happens to live nearby. A bit of sniffing went on. Jethro wanted to rumble, he was batting Garcia in the face. Unfortunately it wasn’t the place to let them play.

Second was seeing our previous puppy’s graduation walk. We don’t get to interact with him, just see him do his stuff from afar. It’s amazing how they get trained in 4 months. He will soon be out guiding.

I have the utmost respect for the folks that raise and train these amazing dogs. What a difference they make for the folks that need them! A very worthy investment of time and effort.

Hard to beat a hound dog as a country companion, although their noses do lead them astray sometimes!

No insult there. We love just about every kind of dog. I love the long snout look. He definitely lives up to the velcro dog reputation. Loves to be around his people.

Gibby and Garcia went to Vermont this past weekend. Gib demonstrated his skill at going up and down the fire tower stairs. Fortunately he didn’t go above the first landing as the tower was covered in rime ice and it would have been real bad if he went up higher and got spooked.

We did do some obligatory wood cutting. I finally got at several stumps that needed to be cut off.

Any thoughts on heated dog water bowls? Bucky, pictured left, was possibly an outdoor dog before we adopted him. He will only drink water from his bowl outside. Unfortunately, the water freezes and then I have to break the ice, or dump in some hot water or bring the bowl in and dump the ice in the sink. When it's below freezing, I'm fooling with his water bowl 3-5 times a day.

I looked at heated water bowls, but they all say the heat the water to 65 degrees or higher. All I'm looking for is to keep it from freezing. I don't think dogs want hot water to drink, just like we don't. I just looked at one that says heats the water to a perfect 77-95 degrees for healthy pets. I know most of this stuff comes from overseas these days, but there must be a better solution than 95 degree water.

Well Seasoned I believe had an idea for me on the Chicken thread for their water. A plastic water bottle filled with salt water to keep it from icing over. I also like K & H brand pet products, bought a small horse trough heater for a chicken waterer I'm working on.

When I had dogs that spent all day outside, I used a heated water bucket like this. It turns on when it reaches 38* and turns off at 50*. It will also work for temps down to -20*.

From the description, "Keeps water from freezing but does not act as a water warmer."

It has a flat back so can be set against a building wall or a fence. I used a clip to attach to the chainlink fence so the dogs couldn't tip it over. Easy to clean too.
