As much as I like/appreciate a brick and mortar store, it's getting harder and harder not to go with the river. Crazy how prices can very so much between the two on the same product.

I have a whirlpool and it tells me when it is time to replace the filter. I often ignore the warnings for at least a couple months because I'm confident in my water treatment system.
My filters go for about the same outrageous amount but I've found if I leave them in my Amazon cart the price often drops to about $35. When it does, I order them. Mine never really seem to run slow and I go about 8-9 months before replacing.

Some 'experts' recommend changing a filter at bare minimum 6 month increments to minimize bacteria growth as the crap caught in the filters can become breeding ground(s).

The manufacturer should have a plug they make to take the place of the filter. If you drink or use your regular unfiltered tap water, no reason to filter it at the fridge. Looks like that plug will save some hassle and a few bucks over time.
