Had time this morning to sort out 2 loads of logs and get the hickory to the splitter...this was the next oldest hickory we had... The MTL grapple also works good for carrying splits...the logs made 2 loads And that was just enough to stuff the shed full. Another 3 cords of mostly hickory in the inventory

Jeff, you had the new style tires long enough to make an opinion of them? I've not been much around the new tread designs.
They seem to do ok, not as aggressive as agricultural tires. Only been in some slick mud for a bit loading logs. Slid a little in 2WD...4WD no problem
Speaking of hickory I just totally b!&*tched out on a load of hickory as the wife pulled rank on me. Tree guys down the street about to drop a massive hickory tree. They were going to drop it in my driveway and on street in front of the house. As I went to move the car and informed my wife she lost it............Blahh Blahh it's xmas we are having a party this weekend, hosting family next, and hosting xmas eve you'll never have that wood gone and cleaned up.................I got angry but........ well she was right it was a really big tree, rounds were going to be massive it was going to be a lot of work and take a very long time and I am just busy every weekend until xmas so I bailed . BUT, all is not lost, meet a very nice fella who runs the tree company and we exchanged #'s and was very open and happy to have a place to dump some wood and save him some $$. Sooooo we'll see maybe something good could come out of it. But boy I wanted that dam hickory wood...............
Hickory was worth fighting for...even if it was with the wife. Ms.buZZsaw says if I bring home another load of wood home she is leaving me. Boy am I going to miss her. I wonder how often wood causes a fight among FHC members and their spouses/significant others? Be an interesting thread. Too bad you couldn't just have got these limb wood/smaller rounds to satisfy your "needs"
I am kicking myself but other half of me saying she's right, I had no time to process that unless I took a day or two off from work. It was a big ole tree, I'd been noodling those rounds for awhile and thinking about moving those round just made my back hurt. Dealing with large rounds like that for me personally is not very fun whey they are that big in diameter. Even the tree guy asked me initially like 3 or 4 times you sure, you sure that's big man you sure...........
Thank you. They look better than the old R4 to my eyes which are not a valid option for me and what I ask of my tractor. Would enjoy the additional flotation with R4 but I'd be sliding down some of my hills. The new version looks more aggressive but I'm not sure if enough for me (I don't need any right now just filing away for future reference).
I have to ask just how big is this hickory? Don't think I've ever seen one bigger than maybe 18" in diameter in south Jersey. I will say, that is some seriously heavy stuff though.
I've always been shy around the biggins. At first becuase I did not have enough saw. Now, because I am old.
Heaviest wood fresh cut IMO. I've seen standing trees in the 24" range, but cant think of the biggest I've ever cut either for me or at my Disney cut. Come to think of it there has been some bigger hickory mixed in with loads he gets dumped from the local company. Nothing memorable to stop and measure plus they are kinda nasty having been sitting for a long time and the borers have made a mess of them.
Not sure what kind of hickory (they told me it was hickory) and am no expert on eyeballing but if had to guess diameter id easily say 36" - 38" range it was large. If it was 18" I wouldn't have hesitated
Hold my Beech... I'm probably wrong but Beech has always been the heaviest green wood to me. I notice it behind the tractor when skidding compared to an oak. Not saying hickory is light.
I've handled a fair amount of each through the years and I don't think I could decipher which one is heavier but I'd say they are the heaviest here in the northeast.
I could be a little off and hey it might not have even been hickory, I am just trusting those guys they know more than me. I could not tell by looking at it, looked oak to me but am not great at id'ing I was just staring at it's girth and was like o boy what am getting into with this beast. I have a few hickory on my property in the back and they are right around what you said 16-18" straight as an arrow.
