Did that last year when I had fifteen trees taken down (used an actual logging company versus a typical tree service). The red oak was caterpillar-killed, and though they were dead barely two years, they were already compromised as far as what the mills would pay for them. Didn't get much per log (compared to what I thought they were worth in my mind), but it did help offset the overall cost. Almost didn't let any go, as being a scrounger for so long it seemed counterintuitive to let firewood (especially oak) drive away, however I still have plenty of logs to process from those trees and many more trees to take down.

What a fun time that would be! If our Lear Jet wasn't in the shop for a tune up I'd send it round to pick all you folks up. Y'all stay close to home, be safe and don't eat too much over the next few weeks!:salute:

Unfortunately there is no access without removing fences and shrubbery and crossing neighbors yards. I will do fine if I push the splitter to the logs/rounds to process and wheelbarrow the splits the length of the back yard to the wood shed and stacks. In any case I'll have to wait for a dry stretch. Even the wheeler will damage a soppy lawn! Or......it might be a good excuse to purchase a chainsaw mill and a bruiser saw! Had not thought of that til now.:bug:

Looks like a job for Jacob Rogers (guilty of treason). I enjoy seeing him pick those tall trees apart. Not sure how far he is from you, but pretty sure you won’t like the price. Let us know what you decide:yes:

That would make for an interesting episode for sure. It might even help launch metalcuttr ’s hobby/artwork to the national level :D

You're going about it wrong. Put an ad on Craigslist for free firewood. Say you want someone licensed and bonded to cut them down, and in exchange, they can keep half of the wood.

If you can find long enough ground, there is an old growth timber faller trick for precise aiming…

Isn't it amazing how often we see that exact type of post on Craigslist and other sites. And they usually also say "no access, 50yds down a steep backyard, surrounded by houses and a pool with cabana and a septic drain field. Also two power lines! Must clean up meticulously after removal. :picard:

Well now I am getting a little leery of trying to take out these trees. About 3 years ago the city started requiring tree removal permits because the city council envisions a beautiful green town of 40% tree cover or more to appease the gods of field and forest and people with environmental agendas who are highly placed politically. My Doug Firs will be considered Hallmark trees and possibly exempt from cutting. Never mind that the development behind us removed about 50 immense Doug Fir trees with no problems. I will have to hire a state certified Arborist to assess the impact of removal on the immediate environment and the cities Aura. A permit study is $75 whether approved or not plus just under $400 for the Arborist assessment. The Arborist is also a third party consultant that will sit between the city and any damage or liability that may ever result from taking the trees down. I am also having trouble getting a firm time for my first choice Tree service to come out and give a bid. When ever you mention you are getting three bids they all kind of loose incentive to move quickly. Once they realize they are not going to cut a fat hog! I want to get the bids first because if they are way high I'll just abandon the project. Things are proceeding but slower than I would have hoped.

0% chance the city can keep you from cutting a potentially hazardous tree down.

How would the cities aura look if part of that tree came down on your house in a storm.

    Good luck

Well it looks like the storm a couple days ago has sounded the death knell for taking trees down in my yard this year. Every tree service around is doing emergency work and I cant get anyone out to give me a bid for 4-5 weeks. I did get a call from a friend at the local Country Club and he said they had a bunch of logs from storm trees that were piled up and free for me to take. Two or three loads will use up most of the available space in my cramped wood yard which means that, if I take a tree out, the logs will have to lay where they fall til I fill my half used shed next year. The Wif will not stand for that! So I opted to take some loads from the Country club based on the "Bird in the hand" principal. (Some pics in "loaded truck" thread.) I will be replacing the deck surface after next year so as long as the sappy tree is gone by then I'm OK there!
