Tonight I will begin burning for the firewood heating season. The oil boiler has started to turn on too often for my liking. The other day I installed a new fan motor, new fan ceramic heat shield, and fan assembly gasket. The original motor was still running, but was making some noise and it is time to do some maintenance work to it. The new motor is very quiet. A little more cleaning of inside of boiler tonight and I will slowly bring it up to temperature with some White Ash.
When I glanced I was like geez...a Baldor for that...then I looked at the label and realized scale. lol
I had a problem with that new motor. I had to leave boiler off for a few days as I was working. Tried a few things and couldn’t figure out what was up with it. Remembered about a place nearby who fixes motors and the like. Took it off and brought it to them. Left it. They called me back a few hours later. Done. Capacitor went bad. Not sure why. But, I might have wired it wrong. And had the direction going the wrong way. Strange thing is it ran for a month, then quit. Anywho, glad I took it to them. ($89 included a spare capacitor to take with me.) Colder temps coming in. I have them looking at my old one to see if it’s worth fixing for a backup.
Holding up good. No liquid leaks at all. (I bought the stainless steel hull and they guarantee it for 20 years.) Occasional leak around door seals. Then I have to adjust door or replace the seals. Regular maintenance things like keeping seals good around doors, replacing the center nozzle bricks, usually every other year or so. I had to replace the main ceramics once. That is an expensive job. But, all in all, it has been a reliable heating appliance. I have been heating with it for 15 seasons now. Would be good if I can get 5 or 10 more seasons out of it. Would be GREAT if I could get 15 ! It is a LOT of work to heat this big house and attached garage with firewood. But, I just look at as a great form of exercise. I do the work as I feel like it, and listen to some tunes, or mother nature’s sounds, and enjoy it.
