He gets them from a huge landscape company/supplier close by. I think they pay him to turn it into firewood as he loads his dumpster truck and brings firewood back. Im not 100% sure how the company halves or quarters them but I believe they use a cone/twist type log splitter mounted on a backhoe/machinery etc. as I've seen evidence of this on logs I've bucked. The logs they section up are good sized. Most of them are oak but have seen other hardwoods including black locust (which I get) If you look at the OP (original post) you can see more of the BL logs I've gotten from there. I originally answered his FB ad looking for black locust.
I think you are right about they use a cone type gizmo. Why do you think they go to the trouble to split the logs? Why not just leave it whole? Sorry if I have missed this.
Less weight, more surface area to speed up the drying, easier for him to process too? Im thinking they are done prior to loading as the split face isn't weathered like the bark side of the log.
Six hour day yesterday. Mostly section logs from his supplier. Most of the fresh wood was getting sold as is. Maybe 75% was oak. Those get turned into firewood and returned. Some tree service logs too. Most of the fresh wood was getting sold as is. 462 & 500 took turns. 460 with 25" bar played a bit too. No metal hit as I didn't used a new chain. Did see some staining in the oak. Headed back for a full day tomorrow.
Postponed from last week. 7.5 hours yesterday. All sectioned logs from the local guy he cuts for. They dumped three loads yesterday morning. Back at it today.
You're getting plenty of trigger time. Looks good. Nice that you can make some money doing what you enjoy
The way I understood it he gets the loads, cuts and splits, then returns to the supplier and from the looks of it they sell it right away. Not all the logs are dry enough to sell, especially the oak. He will season any wood he keeps for himself either in IBC totes or in mounds. His yard gets all day sun and decent air movement.
Yes, but all day cutting ain't getting any easier for this old boy. I spend a lot of time sharpening.
Eight hours yesterday. 462 & 500 mostly. Ran the 400 to start, but the bark box too loud for my liking even with hearing protection. Had me chunk down some gnarlies first thing, groan. Forgot to get pics of what was cut, but between the two days four 40 yard dumpster fulls, two of them tightly packed. His dog Leila loved getting doggie biscuits. I did get locust and black birch logs. Ill split today.
It occurred to me the roadside scores in your area must be piling up,,,,,literally. Asplundh must be wondering where their retriever went.
No Asplundh or any of the other tree companies are doing much cutting that I've seen. I've seen them doing trimming and have stopped to inquire. Lewis tree has a contract locally but they take the wood within a few days.
Had a rack empty so the BL went here along with some heartwood splits from July. Stacked yesterday. Need some to top off the half cord rack.
Spent full days Monday and yesterday cutting. A couple tree service loads (ash and Norway maple) and a dumpster full of logs yesterday. Nearly two 40 yard container fulls yesterday. No after pics.
