Had a spot picked out for this morning with some nice wood but the bucket trucks are blocking it. Decided to hit “The Race Track”. There’s a few spots where it’s safe enough to pull over, enough line of sight there’s no real excuse for killing me LOL.
Touch of Black Birch and some sort of mad pig hickory. Hope it’s not Elm.
Did run into a guy grabbing small sticks, stuff you can carry. Turns out I went to school with his father. He asked me if I had permission and I did. Talked to the landowner yesterday just in case I decided to scrounge a bit. Seems her son wants the wood but he must not have told Mom. Oh well, he can put out a sign if he wants otherwise I’m going with the original yes from the actual owner :)

Good looking sticks! They’ll make up some volume.

He snoozes, he loses. I've had that happen to me more than once. PITA when it happens.

probably right and I brought that up. There’s still logs on that property from five years ago no one grabbed. There’s Ash logs right on the side of his yard that have been there three years. None of it probably worth much at this point. His track record doesn’t look good :)

Ya had me going there for a minute,,,,,Elm, not on my radar.
There is a load of super straight Goldilocks tulip logs there tho ;) Some nice white oak on that road too, along with more BB
Just further down the road they took down a nice red oak. Big boy but nice clear trunk. Across the street is a guy with a sawmill,,,I’m betting he’s got dibs on that one already LOL

Grab the TP, I'll take it. Lost a bundle account, but gained another back today.

Ill take the birch too if you grab it. Seems you cant always give it the TLC it needs!;)

If I get a chance I’ll grab it. You’re not totally wrong about the birch, I already know it’s not on my top priority list. Gotta process more dead oak first, get it drying.

Yup, oak is a slow drier. Thanks in advance if you get the tulip :handshake:

Actually I think the dead oak drys faster in the pens as long as I cover it right away. I’ll get in trouble here but I think one year covered and it’ll be good to go. As you may recall that first pen I ever opened was less than a year and only covered for a few weeks. I had some pieces in the middle that were wet, the ones we measured at around 30%. What seems to be happening is water travels along the collar ties from the outside of the pen and dumps out in the middle. The ties bow down quite a bit with the settling of the wood. That’s what I’m seeing as I pull more of these apart. Some better some worse depending on how I configured the ties. The early pens I let all the ties extend outside of the pen,,,didn’t want to cut them to any specific length until I had a better idea of what I was doing.

On the other hand fresh wood like I’m taking off the roadside may need even more time than we normally believe here. I’m hitting my two year dried “fireplace wood” and just physically it doesn’t seem all that seasoned. I’ll have to pop a few open and see what they say. My fireplace burner doesn’t want fully seasoned wood but if it’s not drying well at all I need to know that too.

Don’t forget I still have 6 TOH you can have. Just give me a good lead way as I’ll have to cut em down and get em out.

Yeah, standing dead should be good in a year. I have a bunch of 4yo white oak rounds to split up for next year.

Don't you want any TOH for you and the family? I killed a couple lethargic SLF last week at storage. Thinking they were ready to lay eggs? I didn't look for egg masses where I found them.

Yeah I may use some as filler myself. I’ve been taking some TOH out of this years pen, the GTG pen, which is three years. What I’m seeing is perfectly dried out.

Not the Race Track. Back to my cousins property. Some Black Birch, mostly hickory and one White Oak stem. Learned another lesson today. The new which drains the deep cell battery pretty fast. I might’ve loaded a third layer but I was out of juice.

Those are some nice logs. How's the log inventory looking? You've been bringing lots home lately.

That's a nice setup with the winch. I like that!
There are a lot of sons and nephews who are "interested" in firewood, but that's as far as it goes. Glad you grabbed it. Some of those logs look heavy!

True...there are some white oak logs in the woods at work that other employees expressed interest in at one point...nothing has moved yet! I would guess I'll end up with it...if I had more room it would already be here!

Looks don’t deceive. Had to move a bunch of hickory branches just to back into the log area. Darn those things are heavy. Took all I had just to move them to the side much less toss em on the trailer. I tossed one on and that was it LOL. I like the big logs, I know there’s no way I’ll ever have to pick them up by hand. It’s actually less work for me.
