Visited a buddy last night. He recently acquired this thing. It's got a 45cc weedeater engine and weighs 20+ pounds. He's got a few little things to work on before it can be run. This is one of my friends that went in deep back in the day with RC. Unsure what scale it is.
That is a 1/5th scale. Its either a real hpi baja with everything replaced with after market aluminum or its a Chinese clone like a king motors or some other version. There are many. Although those look like a weed eater engine, they have waaaay more power and can turn close 19,000 rpm.
This is what they look like stock. This was my first gen Hpi Baja. I had the first one in west Michigan back in the day. Like a real car, you probably shouldn't buy the first year or two of production as it had some kinks to be worked out. Lol.
He got it second hand. Whomever had it before obviously went bonkers on upgrades. He's having an issue with filter clearance. Has a round cage type setup but its too long assembled to fit. He's going to I think run it without the end cap which is how yours looks.
There was a plastic end cap on my air filter. It was held on with a body clip If I recall correctly. On the stock one it needs to be on there. They definitely went nuts with all the aluminum. Probably twice the weight of the stocker.
I'm leaning towards getting another HPI baja or a Kraken Vesla. I miss the speed and type of handling a 2wd car brings.
Almost finished mocking up the body panels. Just need to make the two triangles above the rear shocks, do some final trimming of the sides then paint. I should be able to run it this weekend as my last bits I need arrive today.

Dennis isn’t a whc fella (yet!). He would be a great asset to burning wood if I could get him set up. Good friend of my family. Have a peak at his stuff if you get a moment.
I fired up that 1/6th scale rock buggy. No rocks around without a drive to the channel between lake Michigan and Muskegon lake so wood pile it is. https://photos.app.goo.gl/GKst2Lqyh3snHKt78
I need to paint and attach the panels. Eventually add rear steering but I'll need a different radio for that.
