Warm mostly sunny day here (it clouded over later) with a high around 80. Passed this fresh cut beech and hickory last weekend. With a delivery scheduled close by I decided to cut a load of it today. Fingers crossed it was still there. Beech was, but hickory was gone. Solid half cord load. Small percentage was partly punky from beech bark disease. Other than that some nice straight rounds. Split half of the load at storage after. Ill split the rest tomorrow morning. DSCF0146.JPG DSCF0147.JPG DSCF0148.JPG Ill take beech any day. Ill mix with sugar maple and/or black birch for my customers who heat with wood.

That's great. Hickory would have been nice, too.

    Yes it would have.

When I went there yesterday I drove in so the hickory location was passed first and my heart sunk when I saw it was gone. Got to the beech and :banana:was my reaction.

Its deceiving when you drive by and get a quick glance of the wood. I thought there was maybe a half load there plus the logs looked smaller than they actually are.

Is there any beech in your area Jeff?

Yes sir. We actually have some on our place.
This is one Helene blew over last year in Sept. I cleaned out around it this summer, it still has green leaves, so we haven't processed it yet...:emb: 20250603_100734.jpg

If its alive and not a priority I'd wait too. Been there done that with blowovers. I hate making the last cut freeing it from the rootball. Inevitable to hit dirt it seems.

When we make room, I'll try to stand it up a little with the tractor, after the top is cut off

I was motivationally impaired yesterday so the rest got split this morning. DSCF0162.JPG Some went for bundle inventory next door as they were decent splits. Beech rarely goes into bundles. DSCF0163.JPG DSCF0164.JPG

Thanks. Ill eventually finish the add ons that I started last Winter. :emb: The right bay that I'm emptying needs a roof and the bump out on the other end I've been nibbling at the last week or so. That should get finished this week...finally. There's only one thing I'm good at finishing .................................................
    ..........my supper!

When I get lucky the stump will stand back up for me. I usually cut them 6 or so feet from base hoping gravity will help me out on those last few rounds.

I have some beech that I will begrudgingly process this year. One has some straight wood so it won't be too bad. Other is a little gnarled an has butt rot so not sure what all is there yet. They are both in my way, one of a trail and another blocking me from a bunch of wood.

Yeah kinda hit or miss here. This score made some nice splits.

Between beech bark and beech leaf disease there's gonna be a lot of it around for firewood.
