Yeah, stuffing a front-loader with a big door sure is easy, but my little side-load door almost never spills smoke. The jury is still out on the PE T5 I got for my SIL, but even on 15' of stack it seems like it might draw well enough to be able to open the door with some wood burning..if you need to, which we usually don't. Others may more often have to add wood mid-load, I imagine. The BKs might be able to be timed better, if you aren't trying to get too much heat out of them and having to re-load on shorter schedules..

    UPDATE:
Ordered all he sundries to convert my single wall stove pipe to double. Also, and maybe more importantly, I re-measured the total flue height (from top of stove) of my system. Turns out, I only had about 10.5 ft. of total flue... So, I also installed another 4 ft. of Class A which I got at for scratch & dent pricing from my local shop.

Installed the 4 ft. section of Class A first b/c that was the easiest. HUGE difference with the smoke rollout. We ran the stove all weekend when outside temps were in the 40s, no noticeable odor or visible rollout. I'm going to hand onto the double wall stuff for now, but may return since initial results with more flue are so promising.

I always harp on guys that work for me to RTFM and now I'm an offender. Thanks for the help y'all.

Sounds great! Draft will only get better as temps plummet

I'd install the double wall as well. Your BK stove makes your heat. Not the single pipe wall you are using. Keeping your exhaust temps up is far more important on a BK than any other stove I've been around. BK stoves run very, very cool exhaust temps. To say the least! Cool exhaust = condensate build up in the pipe. Noooo good. Your owners manual references double wall for good reason. I've run a BK with both single wall and double. Never going back to single.
Great to hear you are on the correct path to curing your issue's. Your still on the short side overall for pipe. Add another 2 footer if need be. And a set of braces when over 5 feet of exposed pipe. Keep us up to speed as things progress. Curious.

I have noticed extremely cool exhaust temps compared to our former stove. Usually less than 200 deg. when running the stat on medium.

I think I'll take your advice since I've started RTFM. When you say you'll never go back to single wall, generally what's your experience been with single vs. double? Longer burn times, less rollout, etc?

Thanks again for all the help. Posting here has been hugely beneficial.

Quite simply the most improvement has been less crunchy creo build up in the pipe. I also felt that I had some more ability to fine tune the stove at very low setting. Almost as if the stove was happier, more responsive with double wall! Better draft perhaps is my take. Only makes sense. Hot vent system pulls harder. Warms quicker and stays warm longer. Bingo.

If smoke spills into room when operating any wood stove, it is 99% draft related.
    1) IDENTIFY CHALLENGES TO DRAFT
    a. Elevation b. Tightness of home c. Competing air/fan systems d. Ember screen accumulation e. Trees/obstructions
    2) MANUAL RECOMMENDATIONS ARE "MINIMUM"
    3) Environmental influences a. Prevailing winds b. Atmospheric pressures c) everything else.

Running 6" stoves on 8" Class A or liners can create challenges as well.

Truthfully, I received a PM from OP on another site to visit the old thread. I had previously commented several times, earlier in the thread.

Please fill out the survey that I just posted in a new thread. It is being run by two national labs and the data will be very helpful going forward.

    Thank you

Hmm...they need to work on this survey...we have a wood insert in the fireplace, and a whole house indoor forced air wood furnace (which is 99% of our heat) but they seem to only be focused on the insert, which in our case is used only a few times per year.
And if they think I'm gonna pull out my insert just to get a pic of the data tag, they be mistaken!

The researchers are aware of all locations the survey is posted and will read comments. That's why it's vital to get lots of participation. The survey will get refined with great input.

    Thanks

I may give it a bit and check back in on the survey...I didn't finish it because I felt like they were going to focus on the insert stove, and not the furnace, which is our main heater...they have furnaces lumped in with OWB "boilers" and I thought maybe they weren't as interested in those, but maybe I'm wrong, just quit too soon. I stopped where they asked for a pic of the data tag, which as I mentioned earlier, I can't access without disconnecting and pulling the stove out of the FP. I have the info, just can't get a pic.

I think they are trying to get confirmation that it is an EPA approved model versus pre-EPA. Maybe write down model/model number of piece of paper and set on insert, get picture and submit that...

If you just leave that question blank and move on it seems to work fine.

Out of curiosity what is the survey info going to be used for?
