I am waving the BS flag high & wide about these prigs not being destructive & only bothering untreated cut lumber … I was pruning a large cedar tree for my mother today & saw a couple carpenter bees floating around after dropping a couple of limbs. Then saw some holes. Any of you arborist type folks ever experience this ?? Barcroftb
I’ve never seen em go after a cedar. They must’ve been desperate. The various diy traps floating around the interwebz seem to be quite effective. You could always take a more active role in their destruction… these work well on them.
When I lived at the other place we had lots of these bees. They bored into everything in sight, trees, decking treated and untreated, any species you could name. I had holes all over my cedar pergola in the handrails on the deck, wood siding, they will bore into anything they can chew. It looked like someone took a 1/2 drill bit and drilled holes on everything outside Where we are now I have not seen one.
That's what they are supposed to be doing. Then I wouldn't have needed to put up metal flashing. 8 gazillion trees out there but my shed is your prefered choice of wood??? Same sentiment to Starlings that think they are too good to build a nest in a tree.
We have them bad down here. Some treated wood gets gnawed on sometimes...as Dave said brake cleaner shot into the holes will do them in. I was running some red cedar boards through the planer one day, bees started coming out with the shavings...
Pesky bastages. They bore into almost anything wood around here, including PT. Back in May i did a job on a garage that had bunches of them chewing on the rake trim. Their buzzing and hovering annoys the chit out of me when working. I killed quite a few with my hat and swatting them with a piece of trim while they're airborn. They chew the fascia on our all wood siding leaving a line of sawdust on the front door mat. First I've seen them on wood in nature.
