Had another EAB Ash take a fall and hit the fence….and the garden. There was another standing dead ash next it which I decided to drop and it actually landed where I intended. My horrible notch: Got it mostly cut up too. The saw wasn’t happy. I filed the chain, but it was cutting like garbage; sideways and the bar was smoking a bit. Probably need to hit the chain with the electric sharpener and brush up on my hand filing. On a positive note, I’m getting rather proficient at fixing chain link fencing!
Easy pickings firewood, at a cost though. Too bad about the fence and garden. You must have deer, groundhogs, rabbits etc there based on the fence around your garden. Looks like my garden fence....it is a constant battle with the critters.
Dang took out all the fences. I’ve got ten bucks says they’re not letting you move next door to a prison I take it the wood is usable anyway?
That stinks. At least you got some wood despite the collateral damage. Sounds like the bar may need to be dressed. Common to cut crooked despite being sharp. The rails are not even at the top. You can do it yourself by putting the bar in a vise and filing them even and check with a square or by eye. Happens on my bars from time to time even though I flip them often. Did any vegetables get squashed?
Thanks everyone. A good amount of the wood is still usable. Ash is pretty darn amazing. Sad to see these trees disappearing around here. The critters here are tough. I have a battery powered cam hooked up. While it didn’t catch the tree falling, it did catch a deer earlier this season sniffing around. And I’ve had to add wire mesh around the base of the garden to keep out the wood chucks and small bunnies. Although, we now have a fox or two around and haven’t seen many critters this season. Yep, coulda been a lot worse. If this is my biggest tree issue, I’m doing good. It landed in the worse performing bed of the season. Well, the zucchini did pretty good I should say. But the cukes, not so much. My wife isn’t thrilled about two of the cuke trellises getting KO’d. I’ll check the bar and see if that’s the issue. I think I have another 18” up north. I’ll have to check this weekend. I really need another saw. LOL. It’s tough hauling this back and forth based on need. Yeah, first world problems.
First one fell on its own. I decided to cut the second once since the fence was already damaged. All went smoothly! Fence fix should be straight forward…hopefully.
I think it’s reasonable to have one saw at each place. I like 2 when I go to cut; one won’t start; it gets pinched, hit metal in tree etc etc in Short back up is good
