Any ideas? I tried my old methods from older computers without success. I tried to download both TrendMicro Housecall and the free version of Malwarebytes but "something" is preventing it from completing....... While I was laid up for a couple days, dear husband downloaded a Dora animated game for dear daughter..... I was able to uninstall the unwanted programs but I cannot get rid of this browser hi-jacker!! We managed to break the laptop and finally put old desktop out of misery while living in an RV this summer while my software and license keys are nicely packed too deep to get to for this new computer. I was hoping I would be ok with windows defender and spybot. Apparently not. Ps, I could be wrong as its been many years but I am not fond of McAfee/Norton. Thanks for any suggestions.
Do you work from safe mode, check for uninstall under Program's. Check all browsers to see if it's an add on. Check the startup tab of msconfig.
Not sure what version your using, our even Windows for that matter, but have you tried add /remove programs in your control panel?
Thank you for the advice! I did all of the above to the best of my abilities with no success. One last attempt to find my malware and found both the disk and license key!! It found many baddies after the long install (needed newer version for new OS, long update, then the scan. Back in action! Please beware of downloading childrens games.
I am still in awe I could buy this awesome program for so little a few years ago with 5 year license! (NewEgg black friday sales rock!)
Be aware of downloading any software and read everything when you install. Most programs have 1-3 pieces of adware attached to them. You just have to opt out.
I use AVG anti-virus program. There is the free version but I purchase mine for both computers. I have had great support from them for a problem I had in the past. AVG doesn't seem to use as much room as Norton.
I liked AVG in the past. Back then that computer wasnt very fast and could not keep up with alot of the popular brands, but AVG let my computer work just fine without bogging it down.
Norton and McAffee are almost like viruses themselves now-- they are usually installed accidentally by users installing other software, are difficult to remove, and can cause a computer to stop functioning. True story: I had one customer who regularly updated his software. I think it was his browser that kept installing norton every time it was updated. As soon as Norton was installed, his internet ceased to work because it would install it's own BROKEN proxy server. Made a good chunk of cash fixing the same problem over and over...
AMEN! For PC's that are already infected, I've always loved ComboFix. It runs in a DOS shell to remove malware more effectively. I hope no one ever needs it but if you are in a pinch give it a try.
