Hey..thanks for the rattle ! Never seen...in person...sap at 9% right out of the tree. Never even heard of it that high ! That would be something to see !

 

In my woods....my highest was 4% out of a sugar maple....maybe 1.5-2% out of a red. 9% is unheard of around here. Very cool!

 

I've got a mountain banjo made outta red oak but it's clearly red oak unlike whatever I have pictured lol. I'm curious who's making them outta the hybrid oaks? Would like to see one.

 

They are only visible from a canoe.

 

As a banjo player, IF ONLY I could count the number of Deliverance references I get.

 

Looks more like white oak than red oak to me, although none of the pics appear to be absolutish.
White oak usually smells like vanilla when fresh cut or split.
Dunno how to describe red oak smell beyond it doesn't smell like white oak. Bitter maybe ?


I was gonna say Fred as well.

 

Nice score, some of the bark looks like white oak. Great farwood either way.

 

Fred Oak has a nice ring to it.

 

Id say red smells like vinegar
