Fire still isn't completely out, but all evacuation orders are lifted now. My cousin's cabin was spared by 12 feet, but many people lost their only home, and irreplaceable belongings. A school was destroyed. There was already a major fire in the area in May, and close to a dozen others that were extinguished before growing much. They're fairly certain most or all were arson. Some people are determined to rebuild after all that, but others are afraid and tempted to move on elsewhere. At the very least, the prospect of building a brand new house in a field of charcoal, as one put it, has to be a hard prospect.
Forest fires do start naturally, and are part of nature's self healing, but with the "help" of an extraordinary dry year, this is one of the biggest and worst in our history, and to my knowledge, affected the most residential area since a huge fire burned through the capital city back in the 19th century.
Someone said jail will be the safest place for the guy who started it, if the locals catch him first. I agree.

It's crazy to see how the fire seemingly randomly jumped over certain places. It burned roots 5 feet underground and came back up. About 40 square miles burned, 8 communities majorly affected, one of those lost close to half it's buildings. Several other communities spent weeks evacuated with the fire dangerously close, but were barely spared. It's going to be a long road back to these places looking like they did a few months ago.

All fire related i believe. We don't normally have much trouble with beetles, not with trees anyway. We've had some reports of them showing up and damaging smaller, softer plants this year though.

I just looked again with glasses, I see now, they are in the burn areas. Kudos to the firefighters that protected some of those properties!

Definitely not an easy task. It was getting scary as hell for a while, and looked like it could go much further.

We've finally had a couple big rainfalls this week, including today. So I'm getting a day to relax inside. Hopefully finish my roof before the long weekend is out.

My wife and I shared a T-bone steak for my BD today. We got a few of them at the store for $9.99/lb. Threw it on the weber for a few minutes and it turned out great.
No way am I going to pay full price on steaks.

It sucked even worse 40 years ago.
Imagine all the 195 and 495 traffic coming together at Rt.28 and then down Rt 6 trying to get to the Bourne bridge.

Course, I can remember going to P-town on a Sunday in January in 1971 and starting to get worried about running out of gas because so many of the gas stations were closed. It wasn't Blue Laws. There was just nobody there in the Winter. It has changed a little bit since then. It actually changed quite a bit by 1975.

TrinitySouth99 Fire is devastating to a community. In BC, the town of Lytton was wiped out by fire four years ago. Due to insurance hassles and government hassles, less than half the buildings have been replaced four years later. Only one municipal building just finished this month and no commercial buildings rebuilt. So that means no grocery store, drug store, etc. yet for the community. For those who rebuilt, all shopping and services must be accessed out of town. During this year's wildfire season, there was a fire a few miles away on the other side of the river that everyone on edge. Just a terrible situation.

I don't buy "real" steak as I can't fathom spending that much - besides, my taste-buds aren't really sophisticated. I buy a couple of top or bottom round roasts on sale (I think it was $3.00 a couple of weeks ago for members that had a digital coupon), and cut it into "steaks". I freeze half of it and cook up the rest for 5-7 days worth.
