You know how it is, as you age things start sagging; next thing you know its on the ground.

I had a full stack in the back and a quarter of stack in the front so now I have two, short stacks:D

For some strange reason, I just decided on pancakes for dinner with maple syrup.
Sorry about the gravity misfunction there...

There is a technique to stacking wood to prevent from falling. Of course, a good foundation (level ground or whatever you stack on) is only the start. Rather than just dropping the pieces all into the same row, you have to kinda/sorta fit them together keeping the topside level as you can as you build the height up. Every course or layer should be solid or stable enough to be able to walk on...(my own guideline, because that is how I put the tarps on my 7' high stacks).
I think that everyone here has had a pile tilt, lean or collapse at some point!

I think I'm doing pretty good though I only had 2 failures one was a post failure and one was this, I think I just got in too big of a hurry on the tap half and didn't check my progress :)

I know exactly what you mean about being in a hurry, HD. About 10 years ago, 99 lbs thought it would be a good idea to ask a couple local kids to help stack wood in the basement. (before we got the OWB). I threw it in, they "stacked" it. After the work was done, I told her never again! The pile is for crap! That night, it fell over...then she knew what I was talking about!

I am not a very good stacker especially with shorter lengths. When I first started, Campinspecter had to restack a couple of rows that I did. Everytime he finished restacking one that fell down, another one would collapse. I was so glad when we went to the longer length wood. It is so much easier.

Hum.... I'd bet there are many spots in my stacks you could not walk on. I have no problem if some do not lay level and I do not sort the wood. Just grab a few pieces and sometimes I do just throw them onto the stack but most times I will lay them on. Here is one sorry looking stack but I'm betting it will hold for a few more years.

I go up and down the stacks once in a while with a big split and just pound the stack plumb to keep any Leaners under control

I have a few excuses for when that happens :
Earthquakes, strong wind , frost heaves.

Feel free to use any or all :)

    Darn good looking splits !
