Need some help. Exmark Lazer Z - Kohler 23 HP Kohler Mower starts, but sounds like it may be running on only one cylinder. It will drive, but bog down if I give it more gas. Blades will engage, but the engine bogs, thought maybe bad coil on one side. Strange thing is that if I drive it from the barn to the front of the house and let it sit for a while it starts and seems to be running on both cylinders, blades engage, and I can cut the grass. Maybe a fuel delivery issue? My mechanical skills (actually all my skills) are minimal, but I don't think the coil would start working again. Replaced plugs, fuel filter and air filter. Any thoughts, although I am sure I will be making an appointment soon? Problem is shops usually take a month to get you in.

Is it completely fine once hot? Seems like coils are usually opposite and mess up when once they get hot. Unsure if autozone or the like can test a coil for you? If it's fuel delivery I would look at the pump. Assume it's a diaphragm unit probably bolted to the side of the engine somewhere. A little black box with several hoses coming and going. Spitball....is your fuel tank cap venting proper? Any chance of water in your fuel?
Don't think there is water in the fuel, but who knows (probably put 10 or 15 gallons of new gas in since this problem started). I will check the vent on the cap. Thanks for the advice.
Like others just spitballing. I had a diesel Massey Ferguson 240 a number of years ago and it always ran perfectly. Suddenly it would start to bog down and eventually the engine would stall out. Found that there was some crud in the tank that was blocking fuel to the sediment bowl.drained it out and all was well. This was a fairly old tractor so that had some bearing on it too.
Wow...weird. My first thought was a bad plug, but since you already took care of that... second guess is bad fuel, or a fuel delivery issue...if yours has the fuel pump attached to the valve cover, Kohler had some issues with some of those too. Ignition coils usually fail hot, not cold. Not a ton of help I guess... I suppose I'd drain the fuel, put in new, go from there...maybe look for mouse chewed wires/hoses, since there is a history there...

Coils usually fail when hot and can come back to life once they cool off. I'd do like lukem suggested, when the problem is present pull each coil wire and see if the problem gets worse or is uneffected. Obviously reconnect the first coil wire before disconnecting the second. In his defense, he didn't tell you to use your hand.
Yeah, usually coils fail when hot. I wouldn't doubt that that's gunk in the filter/ fuel tank. Do some digging and let us know what you find.
Is the oil overfull and smells like gas? The fuel pump could be bad. Seen it before with similar symptoms.
That’s the fix… while it’s sitting in front of the house, you’re inside getting some beers in you… sounds like an easy fix commensurate with your “skills.”
