No point in that unless you need long splits for a project or something. Cut that in half and it’ll take a lot less strikes to split.
This reminds me how my great uncle said they processed wood back in the 40's. They would cut the rounds to 48" and split them. They would take the splits and cut them down to various lengths on a tractor pto driven circular saw that had a sliding table to feed the wood into the circular saw. I have seen the saw and its interesting and definitely sketchy by todays standards. The cooking stoves needed 12" splits and the heating stoves handled larger than our typical 16" splits. I wish I could go back in time and ask him more questions about this.
That sure looks like eastern white pine. Yeah, maybe not. Sometimes they're swinging for the home team.
Other than boredom or entertainment value, no need to do that. I had some old fence posts here on the farm that were quartered, 8’ long Osage. I have no idea if the were sawn or split but based on the uneven quarters I would guess split. I have only seen posts like them one other time & it was many moons ago when was a kid.
I have about 9 cords of various oak that are split 4' in length. These were split by a splitter run by a PTO. I made a saw buck and stack them and cut through with 24" bar. I estimate 16" cuts, some come out longer and some shorter, but I don't care as these splits are going straight to the woodshed. This is after tank and half of gas run through saw.
