I have a 3120XP(don't know the year) power unit with a bad coil. This has the 3 bolt coil. All the aftermarket coils I see are 2 bolt. Will they work? Someone on the Int. said a 372XP coil will work, will it? Any help is appreciated.
Hi, This doesn't have either. It was on a rail cutter so maybe the carbs are different? The only adjustments are speed & low mixture. The saw number is 6360081. Is this 1981? This has great compression, no spark. Thanks
'rail cutter'? Do you mean a demo or chop saw, circular blade? Not completely sure but I don't believe you can turn it into a chain saw due to how the cutter arm is attached to the case, on a 272K IME saw there is a hole in the case between the bar studs for the arm locating pin which renders the oil tank useless. I suppose that the hole could be welded up, but you would need to add the oil pump and other bits as well because they are not on the saw as they are not needed in a demo saw configuration. Demo saws are also rev limited by the coil or the carb or both.
The 3120 most of the time can be converted. A lot of times it has the oil tank and all it needs is the oiler. I would think the saw is a 1996. Can you get a picture of the tag?
3120xp vs 3120k case differences from what I've seen: Missing the oil tank filler hole, no provision for feeding oil pump and oil tank vent is absent. The machining operation for the oil pump mounting has not been done, Bar mount pad is screwey too, would need welding and machine work to set up oil slot. Waste of time and energy IMHO
If it's the same rail cutting setup I seen it's a 3120 chainsaw converted. If it's the actual 3120K then it's not worth trying to convert.
That's interesting about the rail model! I have a K model here I was going to convert for a hotsaw but after inspecting the case I figured I'd be ahead buying a case from Husky. Just a note: the new cases as supplied from Husky have the bearings installed but they fail to install the brass breather tube. Haven't seen the tube separately on the IPL??
According to Racine Railroad Co. they custom built the saws from 3120XPs like Mdavlee said. You can clearly see that they blocked off the oil filler but I think it is only a plastic plug like on the 1250/60 from Partner. Further checking on Racine web site shows they now offer a new rail saw based on the K-1260. Funny Spike60 and I were discussing the availability of the brass impluse pipe a short while back and neither of us has EVER seen it on any IPL nor can we find a part number!
One company just bought the saws and added their cutter setup. I picked one up for Terry and it was a saw with oiler and all.
Mike, that is what Racine was doing in the beginning, just like the fire saw companies are still doing.
Hi KRL, This was on a Racine circular chop saw(rail cutter). There is no hole between the bar studs & a large mount bar fits fine. This has an oil tank & bronze filter & hose that goes somewhere, I'll look more tomorrow. Thanks
Hi, sorry for the delay. I will load a picture of the tag. It appears to be a 3120XP chainsaw engine that Racine just put a cutter arm on. It has a oil tank, oil filter & hose running somewhere. I think you are right about converting this & it needing minimal parts. The one hitch is I don't see the tiny hole drilled in the milled out slot that feeds the bar. I'm going to look tomorrow & take pictures. Thanks for the help.
Thats my saw with the exception that I have the oil filler cap. I believe mine was a chainsaw engine that just had a cutter arm installed.
Ok, I managed to pry up the bar plate & the oil feed slot was half covered. It is drilled. It looks like they were using the bar oiler, don't know what for. I think I might have lucked out on this, Randy
