Picked up this bad boy over the last few weekends. Owner and his neighbors say it's an ash tree and I tend to agree. However, it smells very much like a honey locust to me. Not as strong as a black locust but definitely locustish. Any ideas? Happy Father's day to all!
Definitely an ash tree my friend. I've had some that splits super easy and some that is stringy as all get-out. Good firewood either way!
Twig structure and bark say ash to me. White ash splits easier than green (variety, not fresh cut) ash IME. Most ash I encounter is dead in these parts.
I always give my firewood the sniff test as I make it because I’m weird like that. 5 years ago I cut some ash that smelled a lot like black locust. I was 100% positive that it was ash, although I don’t remember if it was the white or green variety. No idea why it had that smell but I distinctly remember it being there. Things that make you go hmmm.
