Another FBM find. Four hour old listing when I found it last night. Pounced right away. Less than a mile from me. Three large trees taken down. All Red maple. His friend had three weeks to get it out and didn't reply to his recent texts so he listed it. No complaints here. Cut a heaping load today and have seven days to remove the rest. What's left of the first tree. Second tree. Third tree (no pics) was mostly bucked and he saved it for another hoarder who had contacted him. Cut through the obligatory nail of course. Its a yard tree. Gotta expect it. Saw staining on a few other cuts too. Probably a couple more heaping loads. Added to the supply of rounds I've dubbed maple mountain as its all assorted maple. Forgot to take a pic as its getting rather large. Pushing four cords worth.
Initially when I got there I asked to take it all and wanted to give a deposit to procure it. After seeing me cut it and hearing me talk he could see I really wanted it so we agreed that I remove the rest of those two trees in a week. He had already given his number to another hoarder. That tree was partly bucked and some were off length. If it falls through it was mine. Him and I chatted about the trials and tribulations of buying and selling on FBM. I thanked him and he appreciated my showing up promptly.
As you know im not a fan of big wood, but at least these are straight and clean for the most part, save for the hollow one. Should make some nice splits.
Forgot to get pics of the mountain, but did hit the score this afternoon. Sharpened the 28" chain on the 500 when I got there and hit something metal 1/4 of the way though the first cut. Not a happy hoarder. Swapped it out for another chain. Next cut completed and hit metal on the following cut. I was FUMING!The only positive was one was full skip. Found a piece of the nail I cut embedded in the end of one log. It was loud and I could really feel it when I made contact. 75% of the time I don't hear it just feel the saw get dull. Changed over to a 20"bar and cut what I could carefully. I noodled past the staining and chunked out what I could. Made for some slow going. Dulled that chain, ran out of gas so the 462 finished up. What was left I'll take next time. Double length pieces. Still a good sized tree to take too.
Looks like you need a metal detector too. Link to my recent post on the subject: Got to love yard trees
Ugh, I feel your pain. I’d rather hit nail than hardened screws. Great score and worth a chain sharpening or 3. Hoard on!!
I get a text earlier from the homeowner. The other uncut tree was taken. I guess the friend who he's been waiting for showed up. He said I could take some of what's left of the third tree i dint take pics of. Im a little perturbed as we shook on the deal and another case of someone going back on their word. In his case I would've done the same though if its true. I did a drive by earlier and sure enough it was gone save for a few bigger rounds. Had I known I would've gone back right away. Oh well, it will yield over a cord so I shouldnt complain. I may go later if rain lets up.
I had offered to give a deposit of sorts to procure all the wood. Give him money, I get a deadline and if I don't get it done he keeps it. When I was finished with the first cut we shook on a week with no money. Seemed like the guy was trustworthy, but wants to keep a friend too. May have also been a coworker too from the story he told me.
I've had a neighbor do me similar in the past. Power line trimming came through and took down a huge ash tree several years ago. Stopped and asked if I could have it. He said sure. I show up the following Saturday morning and someone is already cutting on it. Taking all the easy stuff. I got what I could and didn't feel a thing about leaving his yard full of noodles.
Well here's a pic of maple mountain. Four rows of mixed sugar, red and silver from recent scores. Maybe three cords worth with yesterdays cut which never made it to the stack as it was split off the truck today. Sugar maple from Monday wasnt either. There was a lull in the rain today so I split yesterdays load off the truck. Rain started halfway through, but got it done. Bundle splits General cordage. Gonna try and make it back there tomorrow for the rest.
Got the rest out today. 241 and the X27 carefully bucked the double length logs with nails. It tag teamed with the 462 for the stuff in the front. Most of it was already bucked. Close to if not a half cord. Never made it onto the mountain. Split the load right off the truck after in a light rain. Found several of the nails with the splitter and even termites. Forgot to get a pic of the split pile but mostly general cordage wood.
