Will they help an old/ancient saw like they do the "choked" down newer ones???

Asking about the saw in my signature..................a late '70's-early '80's McCullock ProMac 610. Hundreds of cords of wood cut with this saw....................if not thousands!! Never been overhauled. Just keeps cutting.

She still starts easy, and if I do my part for the chain, she eats up a lot of wood really fast.

Just wondering if this is a "newer" thing because of "Mother EPA"!

Correct, mother EPA. Most old saws (if they have a muffler at all) it is usually an empty can. Not much to be done with it, that saw has been running all these years, leave the old girl alone.

Someone with the specific saw may chime in, but I'd doubt it will do anything but make it louder.
My 041 is actually manufactured more like a tuned pipe, no restrictions in it at all

I recently picked up an 044 and it's empty. I wasn't expecting that.

I modded my Stihl 041 Super muffler with a cool dual port. Does it make any more power? Probably not...

Does it sound BAD AZZ? ABSOLUTELY!!

It's not always the only factor, sometimes the exit port on the muffler is smaller than the port that exits the cylinder.

Now you DO want that exit port to be a little smaller because some back pressure is a good thing. But you CAN open the exit port or ad a small second port, your best bet is to measure the exhaust port and make your total port areas slightly smaller. There is a formula that guys like @KilliansRedLeo and @Mastermind could probably help you with

Why is "back pressure" good in any engine???

I'm a diesel truck guy so I know what Mother EPA is doing!!!

One reason back pressure is good (at least in the case of a two stroke engine) is when the piston is moving up on the compression stroke, the exhaust port is still exposed (open), there are no valves in two strokes. Fresh, unburnt fuel escapes through the exhaust port. The back pressure of the expansion chamber (exhaust pipe), helps push that unburnt fuel back into the combustion chamber.

Also helps keep the P/C from burning/scoring due to ambient air hitting the scorching hot piston.

My 610 looks like and sounds just like the one in the 1st video; but, mine has a 28" bar.

And like I said above, it's a wood cutting machine!!

I'm looking for a smaller saw with about a 16" bar.

Both of those videos have my 610 in it,just about a year apart in time filmed. The 2nd video from July 2013 shows it idling with fresh 40-1 mix,a good cleaning barely 2 hours after finding it on local Craigslist.:saw: It was from an estate garage sale/storage unit cleanout - less than 4 tanks of gas, very little paint worn off the original 16" bar, then it sat dry for almost 30 years before I bought it!!

awesome "noise", sounds great. no offense but I'm not much for idleing a saw on concrete if I don't have to. But then again I have personally owned/own hardly any saws. I did kinda ding up a pretty new 440 on a job once because a few tempers got going, pretty stupid on my part I admit:picard:I don't know, me and dexter would get along great with the purty saws :D

As for Old saws.. This old Clinton has a wide open hole on the end of the Horn(or muffler).
I'm sure it's plenty loud enough :dex:
