Started working on more totes this morning, got a big oak log on the forks and saw the plant holder hanging out the side... 20250513_090845.jpg
I looked the log over and found these 2 screws on the opposite side...
Coated deck screws don't give the blue stain of chain death 20250513_090911.jpg

Made 6 cuts with the XS362 and semi-chisel chain, didn't find any more metal 20250513_092736.jpg
Even when we split it the hanger had very little staining...must have been painted good. 20250513_115810.jpg 20250513_115801.jpg

    You need a metal detector.

This one is expensive: Treasure Products - Vibra-Tector 740 Pulse Induction Handheld Metal De

There are cheaper ones available on Amazon and AliExpress, but I don't know how good they are. This handheld wand style is easy to run over a suspect log.

Stainless steel is another that doesn’t leave a blood trail. Ask me how I know :)
Good job steering around them tho.

    Been there too many times.
Once I had a guy that wanted me to mill a tree from his yard. Swore up and down he planted the tree end knew there wasn't any metal in in. 75% through the first cut, bam.. I hit a screw. Really forked up my chain. I showed him, he apologized and we agree'd I'd fix the chain and continue. Next cut, bam.. hit another one on the other end of the log. Showed him again and this time he was kinda embarrassed. I stopped the job and he bought me a new loop of chain plus paid me for my time. :picard:

Makes me wonder if the Tree had more growth rings than the guy that “Planted” ;) it.

Doesnt look like it dulled Blue Samson one bit! Better him than an XS that's for sure.

The guy I cut for at in my "Disney" thread has wanted me to cut logs with metal showing. I kept many inches away where possible and said I would if he offered to buy me a new chain if I hit it. He declined!

I once found an 18 in piece of chain with my splitter. I managed to cut the round and miss it entirely. Had no Idea it was there till the split wouldn't seperate

Yep, this was a lightweight yard tree to a pecan we cut several years ago. It had a tree house in it, with nails in places we didn't think kids could reach...they must have had a 10# box of nails up there with them.
