Friend down the road had some hickories taken down. This time I remembered to bring my phone but forgot to use it. Gotta love the brain farts. One load was across his backyard, over the septic,,,,,,,so I told him I’d wait till things were fairly dry. Today was that day. Was hoping for one shot with the truck and trailer. Well someone never charged the battery in the trailer this winter. It was a struggle, had to run the truck to get those four extra amps from the charger LOL. Didnt take a pic till after I dumped it. With the dead battery, short logs which are harder to load than long I had one log left that I decided not to struggle with to get on top. Only half a mile down the road I’ll come back with the Atv, easier than trying to get the last bite. There’s another trailer load down there. It’s on a secondary driveway out of the way, no rush, no worry about grass. I’ve got the trailer plugged in, see how that goes. Battery is ten years old, surprised it’s still in there.
If you ever get it, don’t stack it high, or on the bottom. It’s probably best to stack it alone. Ime gravity and hickory hate each other.
Rare for me also. I also had lots of fine powder beetles of some sort last time I had some. I’m wondering if I mix it in a pen of oak maybe they won’t find it hahaha
Good stuff there Joe. Be interesting to see how that goes through the box wedge. Its on the stringy side. Go get the rest before it rains tomorrow.
I’ve run some hickory through the box. No problem. What it doesn’t like is maple, figure that one out. The box wedge is in for repair right now. I had cut off the outer wedges as they’re really not needed. That decreased structural integrity to the point I had a failure. In the process of welding it back together.
Kinda hit or miss with me on the borers. Have a couple stacks of hickory with no frass that i can see. One from January and the other September or last year, but i bucked a log in February that was loaded with them. It was several months old.
Do you have a back up splitter? Maple can be gnarly or twisted depending on species. Seems straight grained maple should be cake for it?
Maybe some day I’ll find some straight grained maple. Speaking of which I had a nice red years ago I took out of my backyard. Nice live tree, not dead or dying. That really attracted the borers. Always wondered if they moved from that maple to the hickory as it was the same time frame. But I also know hickory is a magnet for borers. Seldom see any in oak that cause frass/dust. Had some in pine so big you could hear them munching from 50 yards away,,,and I’m deaf.
