I think we are done for the season here. The last few fires have just been a quick morning burn to take the chill off. It is slightly sad to us as we love being settled in to our warm house while it is less than pleasant outside. I already have what we used for the winter cut split and stacked. Now we will have a summer of annoying bugs and hot weather that we find so disagreeable. The upside is that we will have the camper out and do some traveling to northern cooler climes which we always enjoy. I hope everyone has a good summer.
We may have another fire or two. But we need to make sure we look at what the afternoon temperature will be so we don’t overheat the house. Hopefully you are still active here on FHC even if you aren’t actively burning.
I won’t count us out yet. Plenty of years in early May we’ve woken up to 38 and rain, with highs barely hitting 50. I’ll burn in those conditions. But on those clear mornings when the sun warms things up quickly, I won’t bother with the stove.
I should have started keeping a calendar decades ago with first and last fires. It would be interesting to look at.
I am grateful to get the fire tending and wood moving time back. It is supposed to reach 88 today, so I wouldn’t mind if spring and mid 60’s stuck around longer. It’s mostly the ants in wood that I despise. One of those bastards got me good on the back of my neck yesterday.
Not looking forward to the bugs but they have already started here. Last 2 times mowing I saw large packs of gnat looking ones all over the place. Probably still have off and on fires here too. Overnight temps in the mid 40's are listed for the 45 day outlook.
If the weather clown is right we've seen our last fire of the season. Can't say I'm sad to see fire season go as this winter was long. Time for fishing and gardening season. Got some stuff already sprouting up and gotta head down to the marina next weekend.
I shut it down yesterday. Cleaned up, fireplace tools away. I quit for the season. Kind of bittersweet I guess.
Mostly morning fires. I have one right now. We'll let it go out, then build a fire to light off tomorrow morning, or when next needed.
We're done......although there's been a few mornings past few weeks ago small fire would have felt good, but it does warm up quick during the day. Time to clean stove out and put some new bricks in.
Done here too. I loaded the porch wood rack for the last time four weeks ago. We burned the last of that before we headed out for vacation last week. I still need to clean the rack and move it off the back porch, clean the stove and put the burning tools away. I would be sad but there is too much to do around here this time of year.
Still having a fire at times. At night mostly units it's a 45° and rainy day or so. Have a fire going now actually.
It sounds like you have a nice rhythm and balance between enjoying the cozy winter fires and the opportunities summer brings for travel. While the heat and insects can be challenging, your plan to explore cooler northern areas with your camper sounds like a perfect escape. Enjoy your adventures and may your journeys provide plenty of relaxation and new experiences. Wishing you a wonderful and fulfilling summer!
Shut mine down two days ago. Could use it now. Was pretty cool yesterday afternoon to now., Onward to next season and maybe some extra
Haven't shut it down yet, but also no fires since last week. Maybe by mid May I'll officially wrap it up.
