Coincidentally, I just got the word from GA Precision that my custom hunting rifle shipped. It is scheduled arrive at my local FFL on Monday.
Kinda my dream gun for deer and anything smaller. I already have an excellent 280 Ackley Improved if I ever need more firepower. I should be set for the rest of my lifetime.
Are we really set for the rest of our lifetimes. I probably said the same after the last GAP I had built and before I commissioned the next. My first was a 338 WM and most are magnums, 260 REM is my only non magnum. I need to step up the game.
How do you like the 260 REM? I was thinking of doing a 260 REM Ackley Improved. BTW, I'm on the opposite end of the scale on calibers mostly .224, .243 and .264's except the 280 AI lite-mag But, then again, our deer and bear in PA are nowhere near the size of your game in AK.
Love it. Nice to grab some 308 FL size to 7mm08 and then 260 and do a quick neck turn and just that fast some brass. Unless you have a bunch of time, I don’t know how available brass is. I like oddball stuff so I’m still in.
That seems like a whole lotta work. Looks like 260 REM brass is easily available from, Lapua, Alpha, Peterson, Nosler, Hornady, Starline... BTW, I'm going to shoot my first PRS match tomorrow, so I did a quick trip to the range to double-check my 100 yd zero on my GAP PPR 6GT. Here's the 3-shot group. I definitely won't be able to blame the gun for any misses.
Good luck, share with us your thoughts on the comp. If I have to buy brass for the 260 I get the labeled brass. But I have buds that give me 308, 243, 7-08 I will use it all it’s free. Kind of nice to be able to make what I need.
Having a 7PRC built for one of my boys. Solus action, 22” Bartlien carbon fiber wrapped, Hawkins bottom metal floor plate, Trigger Tech, Greyboe stock.
I did the Mason-Dixon PRS Beginners match yesterday. It was set up like a PRS match, but they had "pro" shooters providing some guidance and extra safety. Started out well and rung the first, cold bore target at 525 yds. It went down hill from there - misses>>hits. Unfortunately, I only shot 6 of the 10 stations before my ankle (and brain) gave up. Altogether, a VERY HUMBLING experience. At least I have some good ideas about what to work on before I shoot a real match.
First off you got off the couch and put yourself out there and did it= a win! Secondly you acknowledged that you have room for improvement. Third you giving us your report card. Good job! I appreciate your honesty! Shows your character. Well done! Minus a bum ankle sounds like you had a great time and you learned a lot. You now know what it’s about. And have ideas of the varieties of stages. And have goals/strategy for improvement. I’m as much of a gun nut as chainsaw nut. I hope to enjoy more chats with you. Unfortunately we don’t have any local gun matches. The closest PRS is a 475 miles drive. Between where I live and where it is no flight options. It would probably would be easier to fly to the 48 and rent a car than what’s considered local.
Thanks for the support! I was not surprised, since I just shoot off bench and prone at our little 200 yd club, so I knew positional shooting would be tough. In additions, I had a lot of problems with he shoot-n-move concept. As a hunter, I have trained myself to shoot, stay in the glass and cycle the bolt. I had problems remembering to eaving the bolt open to move positions. Will keep in touch.
Do you have a tripod? I just picked up a Two Vets, inverted Recon with the biggest ball head and Arca rail. Two Vets had some Arca plates that screwed into the stock double front stud. Locks up the rifles really nicely. Also dropped longer Arca rail on some of my AR’s. All rails are Area 419 brand. I look for to hearing more of your journey. Helps me live vicariously.
No tripod, yet. I did get to use one from one of the "pros" on one stage. It definitely helped on that set up. Here's a picture of me from the match that somebody posted on FB. Definitely one of the easier stages. I had a few impacts on this one.
Nice pic, I love the action pic. When you practice that shot/stance again. Try reversing what knee is down and what way you prefer. And/or pending what scenario is set up what knee has to be down. Don’t forget off hand shooting.
