How is it possible that this tree is still standing?

Myself and A bunch of friends kayaked past this tree last August. The beavers had already gotten a pretty good start on it, but they have been keeping at it all winter. It’s visible from the highway and I go past it multiple times most days so I’ve been keeping tabs on it. I really thought it would go down a couple weeks ago during a pretty fair ice and wind. I also figured it was dead, but I see this evening while up close as I dared that it looks like it will leaf out. Leafed out it should definitely catch more wind. I can’t imagine that it will make it through the summer. Every time we have a really windy day I expect it to go. Finally convinced myself to go in and get some pictures.
If’n a north wind does it in, it should mostly land on dry ground. And the beavers have it notched to go south onto the land. To me it looks like the natural way it wants to go is north. Not really any lean to it, but it’s top weighted to go north. North and a little west and it will pretty much go clear across the river. Impressive. The way it’s girdled all the way around the trunk, that tree is already dead, it just doesn’t know it yet.

I’ve seen where they have attacked really big ones before but they usually don’t follow through this far

I can see them now...standing up on their back legs and pushing. Then stopping and looking at each other and shrugging their shoulders.

I’d really like to have some trail cam video of this project. When I was up close I couldn’t see any fresh gnawing, but a week or so ago you could tell by the color from the highway that there was recent activity.
