Are there any new routers coming out that would be great for slab flattening? Thinking of upgrading and wondering if I should wait for the latest models.

I dove into flattening this way this spring. My experience, get thee best jig you can. The largest diameter flattening bit will need a router capable of running it so start there.
The bit I picked really cut well and is holding its edge great. Here’s the pics:

Solid advice! Thanks for sharing that post. A good jig makes all the difference. I’ve been looking into different routers for slab flattening, and it seems like Triton, Milwaukee, and Bosch get mentioned a lot. I also like the multi-purpose use of something like the Router Gantry System. Thanks The Wood Wolverine, i'll do so more investigating.

It's essential to consider the router's power, base type, and compatibility with slab sizes.

Models like the updated Bosch 1617EVS, Makita RP2301FC, and Triton TRA001 are are on the horizon. If your current tool is struggling with heavy slabs, waiting for these upgrades might be worthwhile.

I bought a Triton TRA001 when I was about 20% through my kitchen cabinet build. I had originally bought the Big porter cable 3.5 hp router and burned it up in very short order. Got it replaced under warranty and burned that one up in short order as well. Turns out they are not designed worth a crap for use on a router table due to the base of the router being open for exhaust air flow from the cooling fan. With the router hanging upside down under the router table, wood chips were able to fall into the housing through the fan guard / screen and the chips were breaking the blades on the fan and getting down into the windings on the motor. Bought the Triton and finished the project with no issues. Massive power for tuning raised panel bits in hickory. Eliminates the need for a router lift, as it has one built in. I love that thing. I would not recommend any router that is open on the base for mounting in a table. Just my $0.02.

The shop that sanded the cutting board blanks for me has a dual belt 52" wide drum sander. Nice to have that as a backup plan if necessary
