I have a few groundhogs running around the place and I was wondering what bait you use in a live trap? When I catch one, I will then feed it lead
I couldn't tell you how many pumpkins and winter squash I've lost over the years just as they were ripening on the vine. I imagine this time of year especially a groundhog couldn't resist a gourd of some sort.
I've had luck with cantaloupe and apples. One thing I always have to remember is to set the trap early in the morning and trip it before I go to bed at night otherwise I have a good chance of seeing a skunk the next morning. I believe I caught this guy at least three times. He is very mellow and just casually moseys along when I release him. I use a blanket method to approach him so I don't startle him. If I see the ground hog during the day I'll just use the .22, the skunks don't bother me.
My neighbor was a game warden and would always be trapping stuff. I would get up earlier than him and go down and let them go, he was baffled for years.
Along with apples or fruit, lettuce and carrots work well. Actually most vegetation we eat they will eat too. Mine usually eat lead though.
Loki would catch 4-5 a year. Loki is soo stubborn he would sit at they hole for a week or more from sun up till sundown until he'd catch it. Once it was 11 days. He's coming up on 15 now he's too old to care. Now I got to start thinking about another way to keep them under control. Don't really wanna get another dog at this point
Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think my pole barn or gazebo would like it much I got some melon today so I will be giving that a try tomorrow.
