A Thorn in my Side

Some of mine have thorns, some don't. If I have one handy I usually will skin the thorns with a machette. If it's anywhere where I will drive rubber tires I take the time to collect them and deposit in fire ring. If no machette then I just 'limb' them with the saw. I'm not sure if the shiny ones or the old dried ones are worse. Shiny is sharper, but the old ones don't bend. I still have half dozen of them around my lower wood yard. Been taking a couple every couple years. Not prevalent anywhere else on the property. Top 3 species for me as far as heat goes.

When my friend had the horse chestnut taken down, I carved out the burls and told him to put them on mp for $200. He did end up selling them. He probably had double what I see in your pics though.

It was listed on FBM so others had shown up to grab the easy stuff. When I was PMing with one of the owners he stated his father would be cutting some the next day.

Interesting what happens sometimes on these scores. I'm cutting and the next thing I know the neighbor is standing there offering me his Stihl peavey. Turns out he did tree work for several years and was very knowledgeable. Cool guy that I had a nice chat with. When im nearing the end of the second load the other owner shows up. Shiny red PU with nice chrome rims and showroom clean. The "kid" gets out and proceeds to "work" for 15 minutes moving twigs/limbs from the pavement into the piles. No snow shovel or other tools? He then uses a backpack blower but only does half and puts cones around the rest of the mess that could've easily been moved. The neighbor (he was my age) and I chuckled and rolled our eyes. Tells me they were somewhat clueless when taking the trees down and were asking him for advice after he was making suggestions.
My guess is they are landscapers who also do tree work and kinda got in over their heads. A crane is coming on the 15th to help take down the other trees which are on the very challenging side. Several cords of silver maple to be had. Id like to get a load or two of it.

 

Any ideas of that burl s worth? It looked tight from what I could see.

 

Not really but honey locust burl has to be very rare in this area and no one wants to ship wood

 

I wonder what they’re doing with the rest of the maple? Would your buddy that runs a processor be interested? Maybe they could drop it off?

 

He's in Milford and I'm wondering if they even have the ability to haul big logs (if any sized logs for that matter) Maybe I'll stop by there when the crane is taking them down.

I just checked his website and they are kinda clueless. Offering small tree take down as of last Summer. The remaining trees are challenging even for an experienced tree guy IMO.

Split the second load from yesterday right off the truck this afternoon. Had a little extra time and stacked half of it in the new rack I recently built from reclaimed wood. Stack is 4' high by 6' long...quarter cord.

 

Here’s what an online retailer in Canada is getting. I say “is getting “ because it’s sold out right now.

Does the color of HL change when exposed to air? RO does

 

Yes it will gradually weather like other woods. I have another cord from last Summer and half cord from May 2022 i'll see if can get pics of.

 

Nice work, my friend. Sure glad you didn't get tangled up in those thorns. We have a clump of HL to cut down sometime.

 

Beautiful firewood you have now! We have water locust here and it has the same bada$$ thorns. As a youngun clipping our pasture, used to get flats quite often.
